Should I be worried about this tree?

Yeah, that looks like it was cracked and an open wound for quite some time. Probably just black mold that will bleach out in the sun now. But most trees won't survive a big wound like that. Could take another 20 years but it will eventually rot away in the weather.

    Post cut stump inspection.

Looks like he likes to torture them first.

    Blueberry bushes 5’ tall

I used to buy mine a bag or two of peat every Spring. And acidifying fertilizer. But to tell ya the truth once they are well established I don't think they need a lot but maybe some extra water. I have a barn downspout draining into a patch of 12 . And watch for leaf-eaters caterpillars. I'll...

Seeking advice on EPA wood stove use

OMG, those are awful stoves, they never should have been allowed to sell them in this country. There are a couple boxwood stoves that are just as bad if not worse. As you're finding you have to be careful how much wood you put in and far too much of your valuable firewood's heat is going up the...

Cutting mature hemlock to grow more dense

I've cut all the way in to the last pair of stems with green growth, but usually don't go quite that far as it looks a bit radical. Any further than that and the branch is dead. Also not every branch on the tree cut back that much. About 30-40% a year. Seems to sprout any where there are still...

Cutting mature hemlock to grow more dense

I'd cut them down and start over with one of the newer dwarfed types that don't try to be an 80 foot tree. If what you want is a hedge. My father planted two 100 foot rows of hemlocks for privacy/street noise abatement 40 years ago. He kept them pruned down to a manageable size until about 1990...

Maybe wrong place but I wanna ask

Many people (including myself) overwater them and the roots rot. Mine stayed nice and green but stopped growing and then just fell over one day. Maybe it is time to repot with new soil. It doesn't last forever. It decomposes and turns into dirt which is not what potting soil is. Your pic is...

    apple tree's

That looks quite a bit less time consuming than the hodge-podge of 12 semi-dwarf that I have.

    Wabbit Protection

I had to put 3 foot tall chicken wire as the rabbits squeezed thru 4x2 at will also. Found a nest with young ones in it in the Spring inside the fenced in area so not just very young ones were getting thru. I didn't bury mine and haven't found any diggers but I have had something digging a...

What Kind of Pine/Evergreen Do You Burn?

Lots of eastern white pine here. I don't mind burning it on the weekend when I can keep shoving more in. a little red pine, hemlock and an occasional atlantic white cedar blow down. A dead landscape fir of some sort I css last year and it burns kinda nice - lots of big flame, lasts a bit longer...

    what's left in my garden

I keep carrots in all Winter. I cover the sides of them with leaves collected in the Fall. Just the leaves poking out. Dig them all Winter. Push leaves aside and the dirt is usually soft enough under them. Spring bugs and freeze/thaw usually does in a percentage of any left. I have some...

    vintage saw for sale

 Wish I had some vintage saw bucks . That would make a great (working) nostalgic rafter hanger. My dad cut with an electric a lot like that when I was a little kid. That was quite a while ago.
