Best big saw for chainsaw milling

    So you favor the 880?

Best big saw for chainsaw milling

Just an update... Now I have an offer of a solid 090 with around 118 compression and the almost new 2014 880. There might be an 088 out there as well. Tough decisions!

Best big saw for chainsaw milling

Thanks for the reply! Chain is sure fascinating...I need to experiment more. It sure seems like every species of wood prefers a little different set up. I'll keep what you said in mind. Much appreciated.

Best big saw for chainsaw milling

Thanks so much for your reply. Everything makes good sense to me. Agreed on bigger filters. My 066 came with a Maxflo, and has been an amazing runner. One question—and my disclaimer on not being a mechanic—no worries on the limited coil on the newer 880?

Best big saw for chainsaw milling

Thanks so much for the thoughtful reply. A lot of great information. I too have a lot of respect for BobL. I've benefited greatly from his posts on progressive raker sharpening. Thanks for that quote. My local platinum Sithl mechanic suggested opening to muffler would at least be good, as...

Best big saw for chainsaw milling

My apologies if this has been covered in a previous post...I couldn't find it... What's your dream saw for milling? I've used an 066 mostly, for 36" and under. A few years ago I bought and completely rebuilt an 076AV Super with my Stihl mechancic, and it has more power for 48" rips, but still...

Want to Sell Stihl 066 powerhead

Looks like a great saw! Tempted..but already have one. I prefer the 066 to 660/661. Bombproof saw.

    Getting annoyed with Stihl

You might also try a buddy overseas? I needed parts for my 076 AV Super...a lot of things long discontinued by Stihl in N America. I mentioned it to a buddy in Australia, he took the part numbers, and everything was at his rural dealer in a matter of days. Mail was fast, I had everything in...

Withdrawn Stihl 056 jug & piston

Just want to say that @TLG went above and beyond the call of service and duty in shipping me a quality used top end. Great dude!

Stihl 056 parts and shop manual

Hi, I'm also looking for the parts manual for the 056 AV. Thank you. Zach

You guys are the best! Saw is on an island, but will do as soon as I can.

Withdrawn Stihl 056 jug & piston

Thanks! This is an 056 AV. I'm a lousy mechanic, but I can ask my son who is a mechanic if that'll work, but guessing it's different?

I have a photo here, 056AV, tag also says electronic quickstop. I can dig deeper if needed.

Withdrawn Stihl 056 jug & piston

A friend straight gassed his 056 after grabbing the wrong can... He's a great dude, late 70s and still runs an 045 and until recently, an 056. First saw he's ever straight gassed, and he started as a feller in the late 60s in Idaho. His 056 ran like a top, and he's thinking to rebuild it. He...

    Going semi-pro+ chainsawmilling

Thanks Rob. I sure appreciate the wisdom. Shorter milling times is perfect, and worth the investment. Can I ask...when you're in the field, do you touch up the chain by hand? And how difficult is it? I consider myself pretty good with a round file, and know what I'm doing. Thank you!

    Going semi-pro+ chainsawmilling

Looking for some seasoned advice from those who are chainsawmilling professionally on a regular basis. I'll be stepping up my milling in the New Year considerably. Probably have a good two or three weeks of milling full-time lined up. I've been milling professionally on a very part-time basis...

How to keep steel temper while sharpening?

To resurrect an old thread found after a big search... Does anyone know the temperature where the temper of good chain can be spoiled? Kind of a curiousity–I'm curious both for sharpening with a grinder and for the chains that hang some distance behind my shop woodstove. And if anyone can give...
