Squirrels in hole in oak tree

The hole looks kinda unimpressive, but the measurements of the cavity you gave would have me worried. If the tree is exposed to much wind it could definitely fail at that point. It being as tall as you describe I would imagine that would be the case. I would probably opt for removal...

    Dead Pine

Blue stain fungus is also carried by southern pine beetle. The beetles will leave the tree once it is dead though.

    suggestions for a new tree

Looks like the area may be a bit sunny for a Japanese maple all alone. They also grow pretty slow from what I remember. Red maple grows pretty fast and has a pretty upright growth pattern. Are you looking more for a shade tree or an ornamental? Curious why you think the chestnut might not...

    Recommend Shade Tree for diversity

Shumard oak and white oak both are great trees with really nice fall color. Shumard will grow a little faster and give you something from the red oak family.

    Pink fungus on live oak

Good Pictures. I'm not sure exactly what that is, but it appears to be some type of Lichen. They are harmless to the tree and they come in many colors. I have never seen pink before. They feed on the dead outer bark.

    Treehouse Project, Boring Trees Question

You could build a stable enough platform at that height without really attaching to the tree. Just use posts that are set in the ground. Kind of a psuedo tree house, but no damage to the tree and probably a lot more stable.

    Opinions Co Dominant Trunk

The deck tree looks like it could be a problem in the future. Looks kinda like a silver maple. If that is the case it will be a problem pretty soon as they grow fast. As far as the fill on the other tree, it may tollerate it, but it won't be the best for the tree. It has grown up in a wet...

    Baby live oak?

It could very well be a live oak. If it's not where you want to plant it you can gently dig it up and put it in a pot and let it grow a little while you decide where you want it. As far as care just give it water when it's too dry and if you do pot it put it in a sunny location. Also bear in...

Homeowner in Seattle looking for Bark Mulch

You could contact a local sawmill and see what they do with their bark. They used to give it away or pay people to haul it away, but I think most sell it now. You can just follow the trail.

    Vertical Mulching

We used just straight peat moss when I used to do this. I think peat and sand would probably be just as fine. The peat was just convenient. Acidifies the soil too. Don't know if that is a concern in your area though. I think the main benefit is from the aeration.

    Vertical Mulching

Peat moss. Compost is good too.

    knocking back invasive bamboo zone8a

Cut and spray with glyphosate like you're doing a cut stump treatment. A root barrier may help keep the bamboo from re-entering the property if that is feasible.

Pool of water in Oak, suggestions please

I like the expansion foam idea. It can be shaped and and painted to where you could hardly even tell it's there. Wait until the cavity is good and dry though (if it does dry out). I would do that or nothing at all. I gotta believe filling it with dirt would just end you up with a mucky mess...

Sounds like it would be money well spent.

    stripped cedar trees

All you can really do know if just wait and see. If they're still green after 30 days that is a good sign. If they stay green through spring and summer you should be in the clear. How deep did they strip off the bark? Was it deep enough to see the white wood? Are the trees oozing a lot of...

    Should I drop this tree?

That cavity looks pretty nasty, plus the codominate stems are probably weakly attached due to the narrow branch angle. Some close-up pics may help show how bad the decay is in that cavity, but I'd vote to remove before you start construction of your garage. It looks like you have plenty of...

    Live oak tree "dead zone"

A picture could help us see what is going on. How bad do you want grass under the trees? There are many options other than grass that you can have under the tree. A nice ring of mulch around the area that is not growing grass could look good and be beneficial to the tree. The roots of your...

Tree Spade / Tree Moving Question

Do the trees need to be moved to your property first or can they stay and be moved as you sell them? If you stick with the ratio 12:1 I would think you would be fine moving most trees in summer, however while the trees are dormant would be preferred. How a tree tollerates moving can be pretty...

cutting one half of my forked red oak

I noticed no one has mentioned the installation of a bracing rod in addition to the cabling. Just curious is that because of the size of the stems, the resulting wounding to the trunk and introducing a pathway to the heartwood for decay, or has this practice fallen out of favor? I have a...
