    Suburban Log Splitter

So I got an email the other day asking "What are you up to?" Nothing ArboristSite-related lately, but I thought I'd mention a log splitter I built awhile back and never posted about. From the title you can probably imagine why. :) Once installed I was never going to move it. I didn't want to...

Log splitter hydraulic hose leak protection

Thanks everyone for all of the responses. My conclusion, FWIW: Log splitter hydraulic hoses appear to be very safe as evidenced by all the sales pix and forum pix you see with uncovered hoses, and lack of high pressure leak injury reports (that I have seen, anyhow). But "very safe" is not...

Log splitter hydraulic hose leak protection

Has anyone here put protective sleeves on their log splitter's hydraulic hoses--the kind that can stop possibly dangerous high pressure leaks? I have no idea how likely that is to happen but I note such protection is advised in industrial settings to protect equipment operators. If used, any...

    Log splitter slider plate clearance

Wish I'd known about you all the years we were buying firewood! Now one of my retirement activities is to get logs from the tree crews in the area and make my own instead. My first splitter (last year) used a bottle jack powered by compressed air. Successful project but far too slow and...

We're in La Crescenta, just north of Glendale.

    Log splitter slider plate clearance

I'm building a splitter with the wedge on a sliding plate. Any advice on much clearance there should be between the beam and slider surfaces and on the edges? Right now I have about 1/16" on both, but I don't really know what's right.

Ways to reinforce W6x15 beam for 20-ton splitter

Hold the presses, at long last got a reply from a yard with W6x25 and some W8. Going down there to look now. I would prefer to work with W6 if possible, but wasn't looking forward to messing with the one I have. (Edited later) Yes! Now have a good W6x25. Much better.

Ways to reinforce W6x15 beam for 20-ton splitter

I want to use a section of W6x15 H-beam (6" flanges and web, 1/4" thick) for an honest 20-ton log splitter I'm building. No luck so far locating a stronger one. My thought is it should be reinforced. First plan was to add 1/4" plates to both flanges and also box it in with 1/4" plates. As well...

How much log splitter can a 5hp electric motor drive?

Yup, I did go for the 7hp motor and it's being delivered today. I will probably run a 16gpm pump and 4.5" cylinder with it. If 5hp can push 11gpm, 7.5hp should be able to push 16.

That is super informative! Very helpful, thanks so much. I looked up your earlier post, too.

How much log splitter can a 5hp electric motor drive?

I see on the tank, nice fix. Be making my own tank so I'll need to get all that right too. Amazing to me that the little angle iron hasn't been ripped off by a stray twist, that part must be very well implemented. Four foot rounds, holycowbatman! You have a magic wand or something to get them up...

How much log splitter can a 5hp electric motor drive?

Thanks, that tells me a lot! When you say plug welded, what does that mean exactly in your case? I've wondered how an added top plate does if it's only welded on the two edges. Having trouble picturing how the slider guides look--do you have a picture that shows them?

I shouldn't have snarked. Just don't see how those numbers work.

How much log splitter can a 5hp electric motor drive?

Blades, by double box do you mean two pieces of rectangular tubing joined along the long side? It's something to consider. I called all around, new and scrap places, trying to find a W6x25 piece but no one has or sells it except by custom order (which doesn't mean a six foot section don't you...

How much log splitter can a 5hp electric motor drive?

    >i think you could run a 16 gpm pump easily. will check later.< 16 gpm would be great. I did some checking and it looks good, but please let me know what you find out.

How much log splitter can a 5hp electric motor drive?

As I understand it, the way log splitter hydraulics work is that when the control valve is in the "neutral" position, that is, moving the ram neither forward nor backward, the oil bypasses right back to the tank under virtually no pressure. The oil is just circulating around from tank to valve...

How much log splitter can a 5hp electric motor drive?

Muddstopper, I read a few of your posts and you mentioned your splitter with a 6x6 beam a quarter inch thick (W6x15, I believe), is that right? I happen to have built my bottlejack splitter version with that beam and was figuring to add metal if I repurposed it for my hydraulic version. In the...

How much log splitter can a 5hp electric motor drive?

Ha ha I don't know about that...the beer part works for me! I understand your concern about electric bills, juice around here costs plenty. But as I think someone mentioned much of the time the motor is just idling or moving up/down against air not wood, probably drawing just an amp or two. The...
