Just following up on this topic. The tree remained healthy all through fall and dropped leaves normally. Now it is budding out with things just starting to open like the rest of the Maples on my property. I'm baffled as to why the bark issue hasn't cause it more problems but it seems like it is...

It's very unlikely to be deer. There are no signs of gouging or scratching in the wood. The tree has been like this since around the time I first posted about it. Two weeks before that it was mostly fine, other than the 'wound'. And the bark hasn't peeled away much more than it was at the time...

So how long is it going to live happily before it dies? What is the event that pushes it over the edge?

An update on the tree. Despite having the bark removed all the way around in at least a section the tree is still looking very happy and healthy (well, except for the trunk). I thought removal of all bark around the tree in a spot (girdling) was a death sentence. Maybe it still will be over...

The three lower limbs were removed early spring this year. I think that wound was there already, but obviously not the bark problem. The wound is on the south side. The bark is off all around the tree. As far as planting, I plated this myself. I'm pretty careful when planting to keep the tree...

The bark looks like it just peeling off up the tree and getting brittle, by the way.

We have a maple tree we planted 4 years ago. It has been doing really well and growing very nicely. This spring/summer though I noticed that bark was starting to pull away. Yesterday I found that it has gotten just awful. The tree looks healthy overall but won't this loss of bark kill it soon...

Thanks for the additional tips. When I get some time I'll take the bar off and maybe run one of my other chains on it to see if it is the chain or the bar groove that is the problem. Maybe someone just bought the wrong chain for it and that's the root of the problem. Part of me wants to just buy...

I'm not sure. It looks relatively good but I usually judge a chain by how it cuts. It is a mixed bag when cutting, which I think it is due to the chain-to-bar fit more than anything. Sometimes it seems to hook up well and cut fast and sometimes it just won't go. I'll attach a pic of the chain...

I have a little Mac Cat that came to me in a deal for a couple saw cases for my older Macs. Decent little saw. I've only used it for cutting brush mostly, but yesterday I had it out for that and ran into a bigger (10") oak log I had to cut in half. Strange situation cutting the big log with that...

But it's the oil tank... what could possible cause corrosion in an oil-bathed tank?

What the heck would cause all that weird build-up???

I've cut a gasket out of cork for that carb side before. Or used silicone sealer. Rob

Thanks for the tips, Pogo, Mogul, and Brian. I'll research how to clean the cylinder up and then re-evaluate the condition. The piston has an 'A' stamped in the bottom. I didn't really look at the head. I am aware of that situation though, since it applied to the PM800 I rebuilt last year too...
