I clean mine from the bottom except that I shove a shop vac hose in there with it and just cover the inlet around the hose and brush shaft with a towel. works great and only takes 10 minutes or so.

I have the exact same south bend 9a it’s a very nice lathe and easy to learn on with good parts availability
