Help on pruning Japanese Maple close to house

Several years ago I took a couple of pruning classes at the Portland, Oregon, Japanese Garden. To get ideas, this may be your excuse for a trip across country, or check for a world class Japanese garden closer to you. Look at well-maintained trees and photos to understand what makes for an...

Not enough info to give any meaningful advice. Pictures would help. How many acres?

large branches 12 inch diameter over house

Working efficiently is essential to succeeding in almost any business. But it is difficult to learn on one's own the tricks to working efficiently. The number of mistakes made along the way to being self-taught can kill the business, if not kill you. Training, either through professionally run...

What's wrong with this picture ? MORBARK 700HDX

It does not look to me as if the problem is necessarily with the claw. Rather, it might be related to the hydraulics, possibly a leaking/blown seal on the right side which results in the left side being lifted higher than the right. Measure how far the piston extends on both sides. Park on a...

    Insurance Question regarding Owners son.

The insurance company can have its own standards for coverage as long as the standards do not violate rules of the state insurance commissioner. If one company will not add a driver to a policy then the options are: Find a different insurance company that will provide the desired coverage...

    cutting roots in dirt.

There are chainsaws designed to cut concrete, presumably they would survive contact with soil if that was an approach you wanted to take. https://www.stihlusa.com/products/concrete-cutters/professional-concrete-cutter/gs461/

The tree will die or need more cut

If you need more reason to cut rather than to wait for it to die, think of the dog that lives in the house next to the tree. You probably do not want a branch from a dead/weakened tree breaking off and falling on the dog. Better to bring down the hazard under your control than to leave it to...

    Banyan trim gone wrong

This location on the Hamakua coast has very deep soil unlike the Puna, Ka`u, and Kona districts that are much fresher lava. The problem seems to have been that banyan trees rely on aerial roots to support the massive canopies. The two trees in this park had well developed systems of aerial roots...

Lopsided tree due to powerline arborist maintenance, dangerous?

Around here it seems that anyone can call themselves an arborist, no training required. To see the work of one area "arborist" take a look at https://www.arboristsite.com/threads/banyan-trim-gone-wrong.319408/

Professional recommendations dropping Huge dead oak

Considering? The photos show a multitude of potential trip hazards around the tree. Regardless how you might approach the job (and I would suggest heeding the advice not to attempt it), the first thing is to create a safe work zone, which means establishing an escape route. And since that thing...

    Removing invasives/pulling up by roots

I'm late to seeing this thread. To pull out weed trees by the roots I use a 3/8" tow chain with a 3/8" clevis slip hook on one end. Normally I put 2 wraps of the chain around the trunk at ground level, then hook to the chain, and it tightens when pulled with my tractor. There is a limited range...

Would a company ever hire someone too....?

That "for now" makes me think perhaps you are thinking of moving. If so, you could target a motorcycle rich area, and may be likely to find work in an established shop. If you prefer not to move, then you need to look around to judge whether demand for the work you envision would exist in your...

    Market research for chainsaw safety

I suspect everyone who has used a chainsaw more than a few times has had some injury, if only cuts, scratches, and bruises from contact with cut and broken branches. While I have never had an injury that required medical attention, I retain a vivid recollection from my youth -- I did a ride...

    Oil-soaked harness/strap

Yep, dawn is the long time choice of commercial fishermen to break down oil that leaked into their bilges. I don't know if it is actually any better than the others, but it has the reputation. After doing the strap in the sink with dawn, to get it really clean it could be put in the washing...

Suggestions for cordless reciprocating saw needed

That is the correct strategy -- do not go out to buy a single tool, you buy the entire line. For me the choice has been Makita tools using its 18 volt LXT batteries, and I am happy with that choice. But I am a bit put off by Makita coming out with a new lineup that uses 40 volt batteries. It...

Dropping a Few Trees This Weekend Next to the House

When 2 people are working together on a dangerous project, the fact that each has some prior experience means little. Experience working together as a team is essential to safe performance. Since apparently you cannot be talked out of joining in this project, perhaps the most important thing...

I am looking to purchase chainsaw chaps. Can you guys recommend what to get and what not to get? Thanks

I have been using a set by Stihl, but I have to say that I like the look of the Labonville for about the same price. The Labonville leave the backs of the thighs much more open than does my Stihl which would make for a cooler and therefore more comfortable chap.

Why does chainsaw smoke so much when using it sideways to remove stump?

That. And if you are cutting "at the bottom to make it flat" as you say, you likely are cutting into dirt and gritty debris which is a great way to instantly dull the chain.

Need a Cross-Body Carrier for Pruner

I recently purchased a Felco power pruner with extension pole. It is great for reducing wear and tear on hands and wrists when doing heavy pruning, but there are times that I need both hands free, either to separate branches so I can see a tree's structure before I start cutting, or to pull cut...
