    Red Oak

I ran across this log several years back. 44" dia x 14" red oak. I flat sawed it in 2-1/4 slabs , then clamped the slabs together and resawed them into five and six piece grain matched 2x6. You can sure see how our ancestors might have worshipped these trees.

62" bar for the first go... any tips?

Everything they said. 60" on a sthil 084 in the first pic. 44 on the second pic. I coughed up for a carbide chain and if you keep it wet it will cut through nails and cable without slowing down. My chains tend to stretch 6-8" , sometimes I will have to remove a link or two(168 links) to keep...

    simple milling platform

I grind a flat surface where the setscrews tighten. A machine shop could cut keyways for you. I've been using the machine hard for three years with no problems.

    simple milling platform

I get all my widgets and parts for homebuilts from Wholesale Tools Inc. they have a large assortment of bearings, gears, shafts and such. They supply the machine tool industry. They have a branch near me but you can also order on the internet. On the machine above I used brackets and bolts...

New Stihl MS 460 and mill attachment.

Nice to see somebody else get started. I built my first chain mill out of steel. With the Sthil 084 and a 60" bar it weighed about 150 lbs. It would wear a man smooth out. I built a platform to mount it to that takes a lot of the physical effort out of milling. I offer a lease on my blueprint so...

    simple milling platform

When I first started I mounted my 14" woodworking bandsaw on a rolling platform between two 2x4 rails and propped logs on a stand to slice them. It worked fairly well for small scale work like you have in mind. You can pick an adequate used saw on Ebay or Craigslist fairly cheap, and be sawing...

    simple milling platform

The saw will cut moving backwards or forward. It saves having to traverse from one end to the other between cuts, and it helps to keep the log pushed onto the bed instead of pulling it up. I don't worry about kerf thickness. I like the aggressiveness of .404 chain and it is easier to sharpen...

    Cowboy cooker

It is made out of a harrow disc with a rim welded on. There is a removable ash pan underneath the disc. Note handle at front. I've had the biggest fire you could build in it and no problems with scorching. Most of the heat goes straight up. You can use wood or charcoal in it. Here in Texas we...

    CSMAD

I caught a vicious case of CSMAD ( probably from this site) and here are the results. I designed and built a machine based on a chainsaw mill that also functions as a large capacity lathe(10"diax108" length), a large capacity mortise machine(24"x96" bed,14" vertical stroke), and a large capacity...

adding wheels to a stock granberg alaska mill?

I had started cutting with a"grandberg" type mill I had built myself.(46" capacity, 60" bar, Stihl 084 saw). It weighed about 175lbs. It would wear a man smooth out. I had seen several slick guide board arrangements but it's still pretty physical moving the saw from cut to cut. I decided to...

how to alaska mill to get usable first and last boards?

Those "scrap" cuts are worth more to me than the boards from the middle of the log. I use my diy mill to cut uniform 4" thick half rounds and make tables out of them. The leftover cants I take to a local sawmill and have them slice it up as live edge boards.
