    Questions for the fuel experts

    Here is my "system" for power equipment, both Quads, side by side, and all my smaller power equipement. If it's a 4 stroke deal and doesn't have one a fuel shut-off valve is installed. So my log splitter, standby generator, power washer, both quads (carbureted) have shut-offs on them. When...

    Questions for the fuel experts

    This new fuel tends to evaporate faster but it doesn't leave behind "varnish" like earlier recipes did. At least not as much of it. What it does do if there is any ethanol in it is form "apple jelly" instead as it absorbs moisture in a vented system. Stabil or other fuel additives do NOT...

    Shop wants to replace carburetor--is it necessary?

    We've become a "replacement" society which means that this and next generation are failing to learn the skills sets required to actually fix anything. In at least 95 if not more cases missbehaving OEM carburetors do NOT need replaced. Even if you do using those cheap Chinese copies is NOT a...

    Shop wants to replace carburetor--is it necessary?

    It is always best to clean the OEM carburetor and install new OEM parts in it vs replacing it. In all the years Iof working on carburetors (full time for over 20 years until retiring recently) I've only had to replace a very small percentage of them and that was only due to something breaking...

    Best small cheap chainsaw?

    "Not to hijack, but since we're talking about Echo saws, anybody got info on which model is their best top-handle tree saw? Looks like there are half a dozen or more different TH models. The CS-355T is excellent. I upgraded from an early model CS-360T and it's just better everyplace. I would...

    Best small cheap chainsaw?

    I'm a pretty big fan of the smaller Echo's in lieu of the "homeowner level" Stihl and Husqvarna offerings. I do like the MS-170's and have worked on a good many of them here before I retired and closed sown that part of the business, but lacking "L" and "H" screws on the carb is a showstopper...

    Tuning and setting metering lever height

    Tillotson, Walbro, Zama etc metering height can usually be found by using the carburetor model number and doing a Google search. Tillotson for example has PDF files availble for their carburetors. Couple of other notes on metering height. ALWAYS measure where it is at IF you are replacing...

    Echo cs-590 or Cs-620p

    I have all three, CS-590, CS-600P, and CS-620PW. The CS-620P or even better the PW is a nice upgrade from the CS-590. Not so much in power or performance as you'll never notice much cutting firewood with them unless you put a 24 or 27" bar on them and start bucking up some larger logs. The...

    Echo cs-590 or Cs-620p

    I have all three, CS-590, CS-600P, and CS-620PW. The best thing about the CS-590 is the price. The power level isn't far enough behind the 600P or 620P's to make all that much difference if you are just out there cutting firewood. The CS-620P doesn have some nice features not found on the...

    Husqvarna 55 (1991-2001) "Plain" -> Air Injection

    170psi is excellent telling you that the P/C isn't smoked in it. Been decades since I did a compression test on either of my CP 55's but they are up there pretty high from what I can remember......

    Husqvarna 55 (1991-2001) "Plain" -> Air Injection

    55's cam in several different "flavors". The closed port versions will have the most power. I've owned half a dozen of the open-port variety and they run well but the power curve is smooth/flat compared to the CP versions. The CP love high RPM's and "raspy" power curve favoring upper RPM and...

    Opinions on Forester chain compared to Stihl

    I file by hand, almost 50 years of experience and tend to pull the angle back a tad so good advice there. I drop the rakers a tad lower as well since I'm running shorter bars and better power to bar length ratios. Most of the cutting right now is dead/diry Ash that's either starting to go...

    Opinions on Forester chain compared to Stihl

    To date haven't ran into any "soft" chain from Oregon. Just about everything I cut here is "dirty" being skidded around moved with my grapple and left over from logging operations. Full chisel doesn't cut it in that environment, so I'm using semi-chisel on most of the saws and it does fine. I...

    Echo 620p muffler mod and tuning

    I wouldn't even test a saw with limiter caps installed as I want to make sure it has PLENTY of fuel to it over the entire load/speed range. The CS-620P's are closer than most others right out of the box, but there are still a LOT of variables in the equation which make custom tuning a LOT better...

    Echo 620p upgrades

    Yep, I knew it was coming.......the Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge truck thing........ Better go outside as quickly as you can and bury that POS Echo in the back yard and replace it with something worth a ****......

    Echo 620p upgrades

    All the CS-590's I've worked on have a limited coil on them. So do 600P's after a certain serial number. To date all the 620's that have went thru the shop had unlimited coils on them. If the coil in limited then you may experience four-stroking even if the carb is set to lean......FWIW.....

    Echo 330t carb question

    NOTHING not to like about the CS-355T. Someone must have bitched, and Echo listened. I call it the "poor mans 200T".......LOL

    Echo 330t carb question

    Those saws are decent, but they obsoleted them with the CS-355T and the smaller new offerings IMHO. I owned a CS-360T but sent it down the road. It had a restrictive/difficult to modify CAT muffler, tiny bar nuts, oiled the chain all the time, and pesky limiter that came in WAY too soon for my...

    Echo 330t carb question

    It's nothing more than a vent on those carbs so don't put a cap over it. Been a while since I was into one of those saws but I remember a partition where the pulse and fuel lines were connected and a barb on the carb that fit into a grommet to seal off the fuel inlet. Something like that and...

    Echo 620p upgrades

    +2 Limiter caps were installed strictly to please the EPA not the end user. I for one want two things from my power equipment. The best performance and long service life. More times than not you will get neither without removing or modifying the limiter caps on the carburetor. With Echo...
