    HP: milling green vs. dry

I use an 075 and have just about stopped milling dry wood unless it is too good to pass up. I would probably go for the Cherry though. What is the diameter? I would go with an 044/440 or bigger. Your 290 will be overwelmed most likely. The biggest problem I find with dry wood (mostly Norway...

2x4 or alum channel for beam machine?

If you want a precise beam machine you can make one like I did. Check out this thread http://arboristsite.com/showthread.php?p=1068751#post1068751 I spent more money than a 2x6 but the extruded beam is not going to bend unless you really screw up, the stuff is very strong and a bit heavy and...

    Too hot to mill.....

I have stopped all milling in the summer month for the last couple of years. The heat gets to me and the 075. I work out in the heat and cold all year so I am fairly used to it but the 075 gets a little dangerous in the heat. When the saw gets hot the gas starts to boil in the tank. If you open...

    Almost 500 2x6's

Nice Job! I'm currently doing the same thing right now with beetle kill P. pine. I'm making 2x10's and 6/4 x 8's and some 8x8 post all for myself so I can build a very large deck around my house. We seem to have an unlimited supply of beetle trees around here anymore.

Help Identify Mystery Conifer (big Pics)

Did it come out of the woods or was it an urban tree? If it is an urban tree my guess is a Blue Spruce from the bark, the wood color and the large growth rings.

    CSM or Portable Sawmill????

Lodge Pole will last a couple of years while Ponderosa Pine only last about 1 and sometimes even less. Most of the P-Pine I use are still green or yellowing, the ones without needles are usualy too far gone.

    CSM or Portable Sawmill????

I had a project like that over here north of Missoula just outside of Evaro. I started to mill beetle trees (P-pines). After a few trees I took a look at the stack of logs to be milled and gave up on the chainsaw mill. I use an 075 for my mill which will eat through pine pretty fast but when...

How good is the Stihl MS 880 Magnum?

I use an 075 for milling. I have a 42, 30 and 17 inch hard tip bars. I bought the saw for $300 and the bars for another $60 on close out from Bailey's. The saw will mill 39" logs byond that I do not know. At work we have an 088I have never milled with it but I have cut down many trees and...

    Bar size question

I run a 42", 30" and 17" bars. I use the 42 for wide stuff, as I get the log smaller I run a smaller bar. With the 17" I cut board up to 12" wide, works great, saves time and energy. So like BobL said get more than one size.

    ROller nose

I tried drilling the tip with 3/8 and toasted the roller. 1/4 might work and I have been thinking about going that route myself; however, I would rather let you try first and let us know if it will work befor I destroy another tip.:)

    660 or 880?

I run a 42",30" and 17" bar on an 075. It pulls all without any problems using .404 chain (now I run .375). If I had the money I would go for the 660. The 75/76 is a great saw and very powerful, reliable but very heavy. I bought mine for $300, a new 660 with a 42" bar would cost the same as my...

    Hand-Sharpening a Milling Chain

Do not knock off any rakers. If you are proficient at filing the standard profile then stay with that unless you are getting into milling lots of lumber. Make sure the rakers are adjusted properly with a raker gage, your cut will be straighter.

Local gov't selling logs online...I've seen it all now

Our Urban Forestry department tried many times to sell logs. We now give them away. We have a log yard with more wood than we can deal with so now if local people are interested they can sign a waver and take logs. We could never even get $11 for logs and it cost more than that to sell them. We...

Local gov't selling logs online...I've seen it all now

Most people have a free source for firewood logs and many millers (like me) have a free source for milling logs too (if you do not count time and labor). I do not think the sale will be worth thier time. I think Oldsaw is right.
