New saw vs older used saw for chainsaw mill in Pacific North West

Thanks for the input guys. I'll go the used route. My 372 came from Walker, they seemed to have done a good job with it, but I'm shopping local this time with shipping getting to be as high as it is.

New saw vs older used saw for chainsaw mill in Pacific North West

Hey guys, I've been out of the milling world for a few years and want to get back into it. I sold all my mill stuff at the time, bandmill and alaskan mill, including saws and big tractor (had to move and didn't really have the space to keep it). My alaskan mills were powered by a 372xpg and a...

Somesawguy, great truck, whats all the yellow rolls / tubes on the back of the truck?

Interesting approach. You're right its not cheap, but I can certainly see how the cost can be justified over 20 years.

Nice rigs you guys. How much did that full line-x job cost?

Edmccabe, that is a great looking combination you have there. Of all the slick setups posted on here I have to say that one looks great. How does the cart work in muddy areas?

Horizontal or vertical for you guys with splitters?

This thread illustrates why I bought a Surge Master / Wallenstein that will do both vertical and horizontal. I generally only use the vertical option to break the big stuff down and then flip it up and finish it all on the horizontal. Its a nice option to have.

I have patched panels before on one of my old Dodge's, and I prefer it as I have a trade in welding and I can save a lot of money by making my own patches vs buying panels, but it is a challenge sometimes working with compound curves over a larger piece. Lots of hammer work and patience but its...

Looks great. Did you patch the original skins or get some new panels?

Yeah the prodigy controllers are nice. I have their newest one, the P3, and it really does a nice job. I think it was around $300 from a local retailer though, but its worth it if you tow regularly or live in mountain country.

Pics of old sawmill equipment in my own backyard (almost!)

I can believe it. The industry has faced amazing changes over the past 50 years. I'll keep an eye out for that book for you down here.

Not really a feud, more one sided. I called Mr.Tool on his BS a few months back and he's had his underwear in a knot ever since. Brad, I can see you writing a book about the interior bush mills. You should give it some thought. Have you ever read the book "Tie hackers to timber harvesters"? It...

Wow you're not kidding when you said you were well populated with mills 50 years ago. Most of our history is tied to a water course of some way or another, as that was of course our means of log transportation. As for the headrig, well, anything can be resurrected with enjoy gumption, from a...

Hey Brad, great pictures. Looks to me that everything of value was taken when they wrapped operations up. Torching marks are often a sign of that, still happens today, cheaper to torch the 'scrap' stuff off the good salvageable equipment then to pay someone to turn wrenches.

    Bandsaw millers and sharpening.

If you plan to sharpen for others I think you're wise to go with an auto version. I ran the norwood standard sharpener and their industrial setter and it was a good setup for a one man sawing business, and very cost effective at under $2000, but I wouldn't want to take on a few other sharpening...

    Bought a Surge Master / Wallenstein WX530

Hey TS, I checked mine today and sure enough, there were some chunks in there. I cleaned the out and got a better look at things and I see that under the toe plate that the steel there is a solid piece that takes up the space in between the two rails and it is cut on an angle. I think this is a...

    Bought a Surge Master / Wallenstein WX530

Thanks guys. The little kubota is a good yard machine, pulls wagons and what-not well. My father and I share it since we our places are only 5 minutes away. I have a large 65hp tractor, but it lacks the finesse of the little kubota. We can put about 3000lbs in a wagon behind the kubota and it...

    Bought a Surge Master / Wallenstein WX530

Alright guys, here's some pictures. The splitter works great. I'm very glad I spent a little more on a good name brand over the cheaper imported options. I used to think I enjoyed splitting by hand, but I enjoy splitting with the Surge Master a whole lot more. This splitter had me saying more...
