    antifreeze?

antifreeze From some experience with running a wood boiler I would just use water with some boiler water treatment to control corrosion and scale. Like another member said, if you are gone and let the fire burn out your system will pick up heat from your existing gas or electric furnace and...

Cast Iron Radiators with Wood Boiler

Just trying to learn something. I appreciate your simple explanation. You are not talking down to me. I am actually learning something here. I realize there is definitely more than one way to skin a cat. Please carry on.

Cast Iron Radiators with Wood Boiler

As you and Darnet both posted above I will need a bleeder at the top of the outlet side of each radiator. Would that not bleed all of the air out when you fill the system?

Cast Iron Radiators with Wood Boiler

Sizing Sounds like you are happy with the heat from your rads. So you plumbed yours in the bottom on one end then out the bottom on the opposite end. Do you know if there is any kind of sizing rule of thumb as far as wood boiler water capacity to how much water capacity you can have in...

Cast Iron Radiators with Wood Boiler

Two Pipe? I think these radiators were two pipe as they have a pipe attached on both ends at the bottom. One is larger which I assume was the steam supply and the other end has a smaller pipe which I assume was the water/condensate return back to the boiler. Does that sound right?

Cast Iron Radiators with Wood Boiler

Thank you Leon. So pump the water in the bottom on one end and then out the bottom of the other end of the radiator. I was a little reluctant to try and use these old radiators with hot water as I knew they were originally used with steam and I have no experience with radiators. Sounds like...

Cast Iron Radiators with Wood Boiler

I am helping a guy install a new Outside Wood Boiler in an old school house that has the old cast iron radiators which were originally used with steam. The the old two story school building is being used as a residence and is now being heated with four different propane fired forced air...

    OWF Tax Credit

Thank you for your responses, but I think I need to clarify a bit. I realize the gassifiers were efficient enough to qualify for the tax credit. I was thinking in terms of the standard OWF's sold by companies like Central Boiler, Shaver, Taylor, Heatmor, Hardy, Nature's Comfort, Woodmaster...

    OWF Tax Credit

Does any one here know if the IRS has approved any Outside Water Furnaces for the Federal tax credit of $1500? I had heard second hand that Central Boiler had one but after talking to a dealer they said that none of the OWF's have been approved for the tax credit. Any insight on this?

    Shaver Wood Furnace temp.

I have a Shaver 165 and I replaced the snap-disc t-stat with a Ranco temperature controller. Take a look at the "Shaver Improvement Forum" thread on this web site for more info. The Ranco controller is a dramatic improvement over the simple little stock snap-disc t-stat which is very...

    Shaver Improvement Forum

Been awhile since I have posted anything but thought someone here may benefit from my experience with the Shaver DHW coil. I have a shaver 165 and plumbed it it just like the manual says. I used 3/4" pex for the domestic hot water, furnace is 85' from house with total loop length of 275'. I...

Blower Solenoid Hey Fletch, How is your blower solenoid you bought from drillspot working out? Does its operation on the blower flap seem to be pretty consistent?

OWF Floor Joist Pex Radient Install

Thank you for your feedback guys. Now I have a direction to get started in. Looks like I need to head down to the local supply house and start gathering parts to get started. One more question. WindWalker7 commented that he tied into his OWF stream at the outlet of the duct work HX and that...

Shaver steaming and water level solution...

Mounting the Ranco temp probe in the copper tube dry well as I described is working nicely. It controls the draft fan on/off control better than the stock snap disk T-stat control for more consistent water temp control. The stock t-stat worked, but I did not trust the accuracy and wanted more...

how do you dispose of your ashes?

I shovel them out of my OWF into an old steel wheelbarrow, let them cool, then roll them down the hill and dump them on a pile where I burn brush.

OWF Floor Joist Pex Radient Install

I currently heat my 2600 sq ft house with a Shaver 165 using a 22"X22" three pass HX in my forced air system. The system is controlled with a simple two wire wall T-stat wired to a relay which pulls in the blower and water circulation pump when the T-stat calls for heat. The system works fine...

    Shaver Improvement Forum

fletcher0780, Here are the mods I have made to date on my Shaver 165. I installed the Ranco programmable temp controller in a copper tube drywell to help take the jacket water temperature swings out and put an on/off switch mounted on the side of the unit for the blower while loading wood. The...

    Shaver Improvement Forum

David78, your description on water flow and heat transfer sounds correct to me. But what you describe as top or bottom nipples is relative to the air flow direction of the blower. What I mean here is some forced air systems have a blower that blows in the "up" direction and some blow "down"...

Who's waiting and for how long?

For those of you still waiting on your Shaver or still trying to decide on what to buy. My Shaver 165 works great, heats great, and I am completely satisfied. Shaver has a great OWB at a great price. I had to wait a while for mine as well, but to me the wait was worth it! I chose to make a...
