    Cutting veneer walnut

Thanks Sam. That was a 1000bf walnut. First two 10s veneered. Probably $5k in that one tree. Gives a guy a little pause when stumping.

    Cutting veneer walnut

Don't nip the sapwood. Leave that as your hold wood and cut all the brown out that you can. Veneer is peeled also. They have knives that take a thin layer off as a continuous sheet as the log rolls.

I got exactly what he meant. I personally do not like leaving straps because it adds extra wood to break unless for some reason the whole mess is going to go while you're under it and you have to leave one. You leave too much and start building a teepee you can get in trouble in a hurry and...

    Land Clearing

The article I posted is about the amazon rainforest. Unless you pull all the stumps on a hillside and you lose the topsoil, I don't get how just clear cutting ruins the soil.

    Land Clearing

How does a clear cut make poor soil? Unless it's heavily disturbed stuff grows back like crazy with the seed litter and stump sprouts. Even when stumps are pulled and everything is graded it still grows back like crazy. Ask a farmer. The northern half of our state was clear cut in the 1800s and...

    Land Clearing

I don't know about out there Northy but here when you open the canopy there are 50+ trees to take the place of the one tree you cut down. Their vigorous growth absorbs vastly more carbon then that one old tree that got cut has in years. The tops may release gas but they also replenish the soil...

Tree paint other then tree paint?

Typically the trees to be cut are marked. Rarely are just the save trees marked, but that does happen. Usually in an oak shelterwood cut. Sometimes the paint is just drying on a sale when I get there and sometimes it's been years. Flagging tape doesn't last very long. Either the weather or the...

Anyone ever knocked the drive links off a chain?

I'll bet. That's why they often start cuts with a smaller saw right? Probably a little tougher to put your knee into a 60" bar to snap the chain back over when you throw it. Probably set the saw down hill a ways huh?

Anyone ever knocked the drive links off a chain?

Yep. Clearing out brush around a stump of a dollar tree happens all the time. Especially if you're not running full throttle in the brush and you're excessive with the arm movements that day. A tooth grabs a twig or like you said gets between the drives and the rail. I'm guessing when the op...

Anyone ever knocked the drive links off a chain?

Some brushy jobs I'll throw chains a dozen times a day. It can't be helped with a longer bar sometimes and unless you're running the chain super tight it will grab and throw. I've seen links get chewed like that many times and on an 18" bar that chain will still run all day with proper clean up...

Tree paint other then tree paint?

Yeah you were right about having to paint close up. Like right on the tree. Only had to use one can of enamel. Should be fine I'd think

Anyone ever knocked the drive links off a chain?

I cut timber for a living and do it all the time. It takes literally seconds and time is money. I've never had the inside of the rails gouge out on a bar ever.

Anyone ever knocked the drive links off a chain?

It's also much easier to throw chains on longer bars. Sometimes the drive links don't match up exactly with the teeth on the bar tip, which could happen when loosening and tightening chain. Sometimes all it takes is for a tooth to grab some brush and it tosses it. If you run bars longer then...

Anyone ever knocked the drive links off a chain?

It's not unusual for a thrown chain to have some drive links boogered up. Typically when you throw a chain a link grabbed something which caused it to de-rail. The rim does the damage to the chain but it's harder then the chain and rarely is damaged itself . If the damage is bad enough(like...
