    Lithium battery lifetime?

The charge and discharge cycles programmed into the chargers can make a big difference on longevity. If they dont care about longevity, they can set the settings to drain the battery down closer to fully discharged, I have had the Milwaukee M28 volt system for over 10 years. I have replaced two...

    Fire outlook towers

The US Forest Service had some standard designs and specifications that several firms could supply. There are some PDF copies out on the web. The tower in the photo looks like one of their standard designs despite being in Canada There was a small cab design and a larger cab design as well as a...

    What are your dream trucks?

Mogs are available in the states, just not new. http://www.unimogcenter.com/ He is in NH. Once they are 25 years old they can be imported. There is still a lot of ex German military stock around Europe, this company in England https://www.unimogs.co.uk/our-stock/unimogs builds them to spec and...

What additions are you making to your 2020 firewooding arsenal?

I picked up a gas powered Honda capstan winch last year. It worked well but in my steep hilly terrain the lack of a skidder cone became obvious. I work solo and jogging up and down a steep slope to get the butt lifted up over roots or rock gets old. If the skidder cone cuts that by 75% it would...

    Safety in residential areas

A couple other comments. Document everything. Videos are the best but take photos with time stamps if you dont have access to video. If there are other neighbors get them on board. The more voters that are upset is more motivation for government folks to get involved. Sleazebags get away with...

    Safety in residential areas

Deed restrictions typically are difficult to enforce. You would need to lawyer up and get an injunction to stop work, you then get to go to court and prove that the owner is in violation of the restrictions and prove damages. Contrary to popular belief, law enforcement or local government will...

Any baby boomers still heat with wood?

59 model. I haven't bought heating oil for 5 years in northern NH. I run a mix of a minisplit for shoulder seasons and days over 30F and older wood boiler with 500 gallons of storage. I dropped trees in the woods, cut them up and either split them in the woods or hauled the rounds home and hand...

    Chip Truck Rocket Ship

I bought one of them eleven years ago for a project in eastern NC, I think it was Phelps but didn't have the box on the end. I also installed a BID version from New Brunswick. The Phelps was only used four years and the state pulled the subsidy so there it sits. Looking on google earth it was...

What can I do to improve the health of the wooded parts of my property?

IMO, nothing wrong with herbicide if used responsibly. Cut the invasive and immediately using a brush apply to the cut. Few people have the patience and persistence to keep hacking at regrowth of invasives long enough to actually kill it off.

    About Unfreezing Wood

I worked for a hardwood pulpmill for 17 years in a northern climate. All of our logs would be "frozen" for several months a year. Unless the logs were waterlogged, they didn't substantially freeze unless the temps are quite low. I think tree sap in the winter effectively has an antifreeze...

    Well then

If it was weld on pressure vessel I would worry about it but it sure looks to me like you can get another 25 years by just welding it up

    Best Tool for Girdling ?

A follow up, I got the Lancelot carving blade with the higher cutter count for my angle grinder. It works quick but as others had warned it can be a handful. I think I just need to modify the blade guard on the grinder to limit the depth of cut as that's where it can get "grabby". What happens...

    Best Tool for Girdling ?

Not a legal issue in NH, there is very strong protection for private property owners in the state from folks getting injured. As long as the land is not posted, the public enters the property at risk and cannot sue for any damages due to getting injured. There have been multiple attempts over...

    Best Tool for Girdling ?

Thanks for the suggestions. The bark spray issue is far more political than practical. Its a very "green" town and a hiking trail runs past the worse infestation so plenty of "eyes" on whatever I do. I will probably post a laminated sign explaining TSI to keep the phone calls down to a minimum...

    Best Tool for Girdling ?

Hi All, I bought an 80 acre lot that got hammered by an ice storm back in 1998. It was mostly sugar maple but regenerated in some spots to almost total beech. There are many healthy mature beech that survived the ice storm but the regenerated beech is loaded with beech blight. There still are...

    Fire outlook towers

There are a couple of companies on the internet selling these towers. I think they would prefer to erect them for the buyer. Most of the ones I have seen are tied directly into the rock. They tend to attract lightning and usually are extensively grounded.

    Wood heat for new house

There is an alternative to a full DIY install. The cost for 12K Btu unit online is around $1,700 for Mitsubishi cold climate heat pump with a high COP. Mitsubishi only sells through distributors and warranty claims are only handled by dealers. Some dealers do sell on line on Ebay but beyond...

    Wood heat for new house

Thumbs up for a minisplit. I am up in northern NH and use a 12,000 btuunit to heat around 1600 square feet anytime its over about 20 degrees. Since you are building new, spend money on hard core insulation. Insulate the foundation walls and floor. Go with 6" walls and consider putting 1/2" of...
