looking for a modded muffler for my stock 390xp. the saw has absolutely nothing done to it and i'm really not looking to open it up, but i would like to get whatever small gains are available by going to a modded muffler done by one of you fellas who have done this for years and knows what your doing.

so, who's got my hot rod 390xp muffler? What carb adjustments to I need to make for your specific muffler and are different styles of mods made for low end, midrange, and high rpm?

Educate me briefly, and tell me what I'm spending. thanks!

Modding the stock muffler sensibly doesn't really tune it to run better in any RPM range, it just makes it run better everywhere. You're just taking a restriction away. How much fuel you have to add to the H needle depends on how much you open it up, which pretty much depends on how loud you're willing to tolerate.

Let's say I don't care how loud it is...what say you? The only thing I care about is not negatively affecting my saw in any way. I want a simple, quantifiable performance gain without permanently affecting my saw.

Lots of guys can help you out but @Red97 has the deflector you need to mod it. I'm not sure if he'd do the work but start there.

This is something that I have been curious about as well.

The vast majority of my cutting is done in the Mt Hood National Forest, are any/most/all of the muffler mods going to “Outlaw” my saw(s) from being used in the NF?

Doug

Here in the northeast in the state forest I was asked if my spark arrestors were in all my saws. I never expected that question being asked. But I never touched my mufflers.(yet) I figure it’s smart not to start forest fires today. I plan on hot rod a few of my mufflers but I’ll install spark arrestors with the mod.
