Somebody here said that old boots can dry up, get brittle, and rip with age. The crack or rip opens up air and lets it into the fuel mixture. Engine then runs hot and that's all she wrote.

My opinion is this... I have saws with mostly intake blocks, but i also own several kinds of power equipment with boots. Either of them can fail, crack, or leak. I don't have enough anecdotal evidence to say which i think is "better", but I experienced my share of boots that have cracked, ripped or become unseated.
As far as buying used, it's always a gamble and the best way to protect yourself is to learn the signs of abuse, damage and neglect to watch out for. So whether a boot or block, I'd never buy sight unseen, you have to be able to look it over, etc

Mostly on Stihls, the boots don't rip, or rot
