I'd say you are getting close to OEM Gregg. My 460bb kit looked cleaner than a 440 Mahle p&c I have that was manufactured in '04. The kits you have now are also a lot better quality compared to other aftermarket kits I've seen. Keep up the good work! :cheers:
 
Nice to hear from the Grande Dog. Any other mail order place and I wouldn't have ordered a generic kit, but you guys seem to care about your business. I want you to know I'm paying like it's a Kia Rio and I don't expect to get a Mercedes.

I know it's not easy to manufacture a top quality part and repeat the process thousands of times and not have a few bad eggs.

I think when you get my kit back you won't have any problem seeing the nick(s) in the cyl. wall.

It seems like everyone who assembles one of these gets a squish of over .050". What does the manufacturer recommend?
 
Atlarge..on your camera.. look for the little flower setting. You do not need any zoom. just move the camera closer. Might need to set the camera on a bag of dried beans or something then use the timer. Good close up pics can be had providing enough light is used.
 
good to hear, specialy since im planning to order a 066bb by this spring. when will be a good time to order?
 
A few things I am seeing with some of the kits is the squish can be a little "loose", the timing no's can be out to OEM and port size smaller.
Grinding on these cylinders does correct these issues except for squish though.

One thing to remember when it comes to squish is that it's relative to the displacement of the combustion chamber. So, if you have a squish of .025" with 2cc's of combustion chamber, i'ts going to have much more compression than a saw with 3cc's of combustion chamber with the same squish. In the past it was all relative because you only had OEM's building cylinders to spec. We're beginning to cloud the water a little because we're starting to modify size and shape of combustion chambers. The compression reading is going to be more useful in the future.

We just had the proto-type BBN 066's come through for testing a few weeks back. I should be receiving the latest generation in about 8 weeks. This BBN 066 is an example of a cylinder that we've decreased the the combustion chamber on by about 1 cc.

So until you have the latest generation you'll continue selling the old ones?

Unless there is a problem that precludes them from being functional we sell them. We did have an issue recently on the BBN 066's where the piston was hitting on a high spot that was created by decreasing the combustion chamber volume. I ended up throwing about 225 cylinders in the trash.

From what I've seen, the greatest issues with the WoodlandPro kits has been combustion chamber/squish shape, and exhaust port shape. Many kits are showing up where the squish is tapered reverse from what it should be. In other words, it's tigher at the edge of the combustion chamber than the cylinder wall. Some have been bad enough to be unusable. They actually hit. Those were all pitched. The last ones I saw have a beautifully machined, perfectly shaped squish and combustion chamber. I'm talking a work of art here! They are improving.

The next biggest problem is the exhaust port shape. Most are either flat, or even convex. They really need to get a curved exhaust port roof and floor if they want to avoid catching rings.

I so desperately want these kits to be what they can be. There's no reason these kits can't be cast with close to ideal port timings and shapes. This last 066BB is nearly there. Widen the intake port and you'll have a screamer. A modder's going to want to widen the transfers as well. I've given a fair amount of input on these kits, and I've seen some of it become reality. Unfortunately, these changes take time. That's just the way it is.

I agree i have tested this latest kit.... If all the kits are improved as nice as this one ill never go OEM again!
 
I just got my 372 BB kit the other day. It looks like it has the same groove in the top of the bore. All I think it is is a relief that was machined before NiSi plating so that they don’t have to finish hone all the way into the corner of the bore. If you happen to have a set of inside calipers drop them in and see what you get. There is plating there too, I took a piece of sharpened spring steel and tried to scratch in the grooved area. If it wasn’t plated it would have easily scratched and from a manufacturing standpoint I don’t know why anyone in their right mind would mask that area to omit the NiSi. Besides the relief is about .125 and the distance from the top of the ring to the top of the piston is also .125 so if my top ring ever sees that groove I’d say I have bigger problems to worry about.
 
Like others have already said it sounds like the piston is on backwards. The newest BB kits that I've seen look, and run pretty good, the older kits had lots of issues. I'm sure Bailey's will do what they can to help you out.

You know I wonder really I have had one in my 372 for two years and have not had a problem yet. If it craps out now I got my money's worth imo. But it still has great compression and runs like new. The only bad experiance I had was with ignition but it was handled even quicker than I could reasonably expect. Bailey's is one of the best companies I have had the pleasure doing business with.
