Yes, its hard as wood goes out here. Its Douglas Fir. Its considered a soft wood, but its much harder then you would think. Its about the hardest thing to cut around here. The bark is killer on chains, very dusty, full of **** usually. I've had a few arguments about it on here. Most people think its butter, but its far from it, its very tough wood, used mainly for lumber, and actually used allot for flooring too, that should tell you how tough it is.

I can tell it's pretty tough wood Will the way it was stalling the Makita Either that or you lean on your chainsaw like a gorilla!

Ya sometimes I pull a little hard. And the chain wasn't perfect either. I actually find its harder to cut then some hardwoods.

Yeah one of the worst woods I've cut was a big Chinese Elm log. Not hard on chains, not actually overly hard wood, it's just the grain structure made the saws struggle while trying to cut it.

Ya, that's exactly what I was thinking.

Now I should go get a 10x10 pine cant, and well, you know the rest.

I've cut Arbutus, which is the same as Pacific Madrone I think, which has a higher hardness rating, and I think it cuts easier then Doug Fir.

Bumping ParrisW's excellent thread and I have a dumb newbie porting question.

ParrisW opened up the lower transfers quite a bit. How are you supposed to determine how much to open them up ? Is it a question of matching them to the crankcase ?

With the Husky's, OEM and aftermarket I just match to the cases with a smooth transition as there is plenty big enough area in the ports. I try not to go deep as to keep up velocity.

With the 84cc Makita/Dolmar they look to be more restricted by the increase in capacity so I'm enlarging right through from the lowers and uppers on the kit I have here. Hopefully I'm making the right move. They are considerably smaller than Husky's for instance but then they do run different configurations.

I wasn't really sure if I should or not, so I just left it alone, I can always go back in for more, its kinda hard to put it back. I still have not really tested this saw out, I'm just coming up to my firewood cutting season now, so hopefully some good cutting on the way! More vids too.
