Saws Sharp and Gen Set Ready!

Freezing rain, sleet and snow predicted for the Kentucky/Indiana areas. Our last bout with ice toppled a few trees, nothing like Atlanta though. This is forecasted as a "significant weather event". Out running some plumbing related errands and gen-sets flying out the doors at the hardware stores. Things like this make me glad that I'm a pseudo "prepper". What it really does is give me an excuse to dust off the camping gear. Got the wood heat taken care of, lamps, lanterns and stoves. They are an extension of CAD. The "stovies" call it "stove pox"

Yep, I'm ready as well.
Hauled more wood to the house and extra fuel for the generator.

fill generator,runs some cords

Lineman everywhere thanks you.

To everyone else, please, please, please don't connect into your residential wiring unless you have a proper transfer switch. As an Electrician I here too many times from people that should know better about the ways they rig their gen-sets.

I just got in from installing a new storm door on my porch. I was working in a long sleeve T shirt, was 54 degrees when I came in. I have to drive to Louisville at 5:30 tomorrow morning, hope the roads are clear.

During the ice storm we had here a couple weeks ago, I had the generator and chainsaws ready and wound up using both. Hope your preparations aren't needed but it's good to be prepared.

On another forum, I pointed out that backfeeding a house with a genset and no transfer switch was generally illegal, and potentially deadly to linemen. Folks there, for whatever reason, acted like I'd insulted their mothers in the worst possible way. That forum was run by people who were self proclaimed preppers, and they also had put out a podcast on itunes. The podcast was a trainwreck of fail and aids, with a side of ignorance for good measure. :(

Hope you ride it out in style. :D

We've gotten slammed here in NJ all season. Last I checked it was something like 5 feet total so far. More tomorrow. And it's supposed to be -3F. Lovely. Gimme some of that Alaska weather, Doug.

Surprised that Whitespider hasn't commented yet how he uses a generator without a transfer switch like he has on other threads.

Some people need to set their testicles between an anvil and a two pound hammer for putting lineman's lives on the line. Even if one knows what their doing all it takes is a unwitting family member or family friend to throw a breaker and kill someone.

This is crazy. We're in our 7th heaviest winter on record. And after tomorrow and Monday, it should boost us up to at least the 5th most snow in history. And it's been WAY colder than normal. Usually by now we're near 40F. We've been well below freezing for 3 months, aside from 2 warm days last month. The state had to get auxiliary salt brought in from Canada halfway through Feb. Haven't lost any power yet though. Fingers crossed.

i've seen it when a 1 MW (Cummings v-16) generator's transfer switch had failed so someone forced the switch, back feeding utility the generator was upside down 15' from where it was.
just a quick fact for those looking a new generators
also, those little cheep probable generator that are at the auto parts store that say like 4000 watts its more like 2500-3000 watts (60-75% of name plate) something with the air cooled generac stand by's

stay safe! don't be stupid

Knowing "just enough" about what you are doing and knowing what you are doing and "disregarding safety", (because you are an expert), has gotten lots of people killed over the years.

I'm going to start cutting everything overhead while on a ladder. I've been cutting for years. I know what I'm doing. It will just take a minute and then I'll be done. I know that this is dangerous so I'll be extra careful....... Bla, Bla, Bla. When I hear this kind of dribble in Electrical Construction I stand back extra far and get ready to dial 911, because there's gonna be sparks.

I don't have a transfer switch but I do have a switch on the line feeding my house that gets turned off whenever I run my generator. Eventually I will hook up a transfer box.

we are in western ky,, they are saying 1 inch of ice then 4-6 inches of snow on top of that before its all done
just for you akdoug>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> shut the hell up midget

You can pull the meter to be safe

Pulling the meter can be one of the most dangerous things a person can do!

Often the Aluminium contact corrode to the meter pins. They often heat up because of this added resistance which then weakens the fiberglass or plastic insulating block that holds them into the back of the meter socket. As soon as you pop the meter out they short circuit line-to-neutral or line-to-line. Now Its good to point out that the meter is often 6' AFG. You are now staring directly into an Arc Flash or Arc Blast hotter than the surface of the sun and spraying vaporized metal.
