Here is a classic example why I spend an inordinate amount of time pestering you guys about fixes, trouble shooting, and ideas.
$553 total!
279 for piston/cylinder kit, oil seals $25, bearings $25, Zama rebuild kit $12, gaskets $4, labor $180...shipping and shop supplies $20....taxes...etc,etc
Perhaps I could slam this saw on Fleabay for $799 plus shipping!!@
I just located all the parts for $85-114 total...maybe he's factoring splitting the case.
Whats you guys thoughts??

Price of P/C seems high, but the rest are reasonable for OE parts... that's why a lot of older saws get junked for newer ones. Paying someone to repair an older saw is generally is a losing proposition, Might as well buy a new MS261-361 for that money. Rebuilding my 034 at the moment, OE Stihl prices are generally 2x higher for a lot of the smaller items (gasket sets, filters, rubber bits). The piston and rings are comparable to meteor and caber in terms of price. Haven't priced an OE cylinder....

$100 for all those parts... don't know about that. I good quality meteor P/C kit is $140, plus gaskets and bearings... your closer to $ 200 in parts.

That saw is not worth anywhere near that much even after its rebuilt. If you can't do the work yourself I'd recommend selling it as a project saw and sinking your money into a new or good used saw. The trading post is ripe with quality saws right now.

Got any buddies that are interested in engines? Know any kids in vocational schools that want a project? As mentioned above, let's determine what that saw really needs then go from there.
Theyre great saws, closer to $250-$300 range here if in good shape with bar/chain.

When I have a saw that needs expensive parts, I just lay it aside until I find a parts saw. I have an MS440 that had a bad gas tank. I laid it aside and eventually bought a new gas tank for it and within the next month I found 4 parts saws with good gas tanks.
I have two 066s in a box because I need a cylinder and I could use a better crankcase than what both saws have.

Good ideas & feedback.
I stopped by today and talked with them...they're willing to do the work if I buy/supply all the parts & will offer a discount of $20 bucks off the $180 labor rate...($70 an hr).
The piston looks like some kinda metallic demon chewed the rings off & the inside cylinder is scarred pretty badly.
Here is the notes: "CYLINDER AND PISTON HAVE MAJOR WEAR, PISTON RING STUCK AND HUNG ON PORT IN CYLINDER"
Crankshaft is in great shape & the tech says he "must" split the case for seals/bearings installation.
I've matched up all the part numbers and can get them about $125 total.
If I went with them I'd be in the saw for about $250.
Think I'll pass guys.:dizzy:

I'd like to know where you coming up with $125 for parts... maybe the cheapest parts on eBay. Sometimes a parts saw is a great investment when you need more expensive bits. Not many parts on a chainsaw, but they sure are expensive for their size ;)
