I'm getting there....slowly. Lucky for me the rod looks fine and I have a brand new oem cylinder ready to go.
I would double check that rod end as I cannot see a rod not getting banged to hell and back missing the bearings...might want to invest in a new crank and rod...

I didn't run it long. Just a few minutes while tuning the carb.

Just a few pics of the rod and cylinder. The rod looks OK to me anyway, although I think it has been fairly well established that I'm no expert!

If it is in there it's not supposed to be there. I'd take it out.

I went ahead and reassembled the saw. Passed a pressure test once I plugged the decomp.
Question: should I leave it plugged or reinsert the valve?
I got 150psi of compression then which I'm happy enough with. It's running pretty smooth now also.
I'd like to thank everyone on here who contributed with instructive advice. This forum is an excellent resource.
I removed it and the sprocket wheel was loose so I put it back. I still not sure about it, but I'm even less sure about a loose sprocket wheel. It might be a feature of this particular model. I bought it in 2008 or 9.

150 is a decent starting psi. It should go up. If it were me I'd plug the decomp, but if you need the button no shame in leaving it in. Just make sure to seal the threads on whichever thing you thread in.

Also, the "sprocket wheel" is supposed to slide back and forth on the internal spline that it's driven by. That's how it aligns the chain with the bar
Not to get off topic....but what would you use to plug a decompression button? I have a ms361 and I never use the button on it....nearly flooded the saw the few times I did use it. I do use the button on my ms440 though lol.

one of my 372's (the one with a bunch of clone parts,and my japanese spec 346OE both had a very very thin piece of plastic in the same location....it allowed the rim to go back and forth but what I found out when I removed them was the rims got noisy and made a lot more noise...don't know if that makes sense. could be some after market crap folks stick on em to quiet them down not sure though. I removed them on both as I did not see them in the IPL's that I looked at. when I noticed that none of my other saws had it I just shitcanned them.

Snap On Tools used to sell the correct valve insert Very difficult to tell from the standard one the correct one it has a blob of WHITE paint
Last I seen when ask all cylinders etc were gone. Been awhile probably all the parts gone.
