middle east: coast, that is.
i got both of theses saws in my "$500.00 room full of saws" purchase.
the 066 came as seen in the pics below. i was able to scrounge a good amount of the missing parts from the boxes and boxes of stuff i got in the deal.

several AS members helped with finding the rest of the odd stuff i needed to complete the old lazarus 066. i had never attempted these kinds of builds before an 026 a couple months ago. without AS this would not have been possible! thanks guys!

everything on the saw is a used mismatched part that i found or traded for except a new piston, fuel line, name plate, and carb kit.
if you look close you will see my solution for a broken upper dawg mount. i reinvented (welded) the inner spike so it would be bolted on to the unused boss behind the original hole.

the 038m started life looking like this old carcass.
but boy has it come a long way!

<a ="http://s263.photobucket.com/albums/ii150/volks-man/?action=view¤t=PICT2139.jpg" target="_blank">

nearly the entire 038m is from my used parts boxes. the only things i had to get were the new rings, new circlips, new fuel line, crank seals, and new impulse hose.
the p/c were good used ones i found in a box of odd parts just like all the rest of the missing pieces. on a whim i tossed an old bing 48 carb on it without new diaphragms or anything because the kit isn't here yet. it works perfectly!!! what luck!

after running the 038m for a few minutes i think it might be my new favorite saw. it didn't scream through the wood but it did everything effortlessly. like an old diesel engine dozer, just chugging along moving mountains. :)

thanks for all your help fellas!

Volks - great pics and great work. Now you have a couple of stihl's finest saws that look real nice.

That's great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks like you made your money back there

thanks for the complements guys!
this is almost my first time out with building saws so it's like a big victory to have them run good, cut great, and look good to boot. the 026 i built from the parts lot before looked about the same and was a good warm up for the bigger saws. :)

here's the 026. i sold it in the trading post. i hope the new owner is having a blast with it!
this one started as a dirty carcass much like the 038m. it required a new piston, flywheel side seal, and fuel line. as i recall, the rest was in the boxes.

i suppose there is something very satisfying about resurrecting any defunct equipment. though, saws seem to be a little above the average lawnmower or string trimmer. :)

and to think....
there were nearly complete saws in there somewhere!! :dizzy: :)

I remember that old post about the "$500 room full of saws".....I wasn't sure if you had gone through with it or not!......

You got some great scores in that bunch and two really nice saws in this post...WTG!!

Do you have lots of stuff left yet???

Nice job Volks. The rebuilding of junk into something usable is very satisfying. I'm having touble keeping my saws seperated though, I think the wife is starting to get a head count LOL.

So did you break even on the $500 yet?

i have moved a few parts.:)
sales wise i have just more than recovered the cost of the buyout.
value wise i have crushed the initial investment. the 066 is worth 'pert near' what i paid for the lot.

so................
i have the 066, 038m, 026 (had), 020av, makita 520, poulan s25, homelite xl2, husqy 335xpt, and potentially other good runners all in the lot that are in the stable now.

i guess i did alright buying that stuff. ;)

there are 15 or so other odd saws that run but need work that i will get to one day. :dizzy:

066 in action

i managed to talk the wife in to shooting a short video of me splitting wood today. the wood is a standing dead poplar. i am very near the end of my first tank on the rebuild with the baileys woodsman piston.
the camera seems to capture and accentuate the wizzing sound this saw makes. i assure you the wizzing is not that noticeable in person.

pay no attention to the junk bikes in the background. i am building the wife a custom beach cruiser for this summer. ;)
