Anyway, I am hoping to put up a large piece of red oak live edge mantle on this stone fireplace. My thoughts are too drill some 3/4 to 1 in. holes into the stones(not mortar) and use either anchors or just threaded rods to help hold the back of the mantle edge against the stone. I haven't decided on whether to use a back ledger type of board over the stone or try to roughly shape the mantle piece to the stone profile.

Because the mantle piece I'm using is massive, I feel it's necessary to have some legs on the sides for it to help hold the piece which is 3"thick X 8' long X 16" wide.

My question for those in the know, is about drilling the stone. I'm thinking a good Milwaukee rotary hammer drill or Bosch should do the trick but I dont know. I want to get a corded heavy duty drill that could be used later for other projects. Anyone have recommendations on drills for this and drill bits etc.?
