FAIRIFIELD, Maine -- Firewood soaked in kerosene stared a fire that caused a series of explosions at a Norridgewock Road garage on Thursday morning. No one was injured.
Larry Ricker told the Fairfield Fire Department that he was putting wood into the garage stove when a flash fire caused a series of explosions.
"Apparently the gentleman was loading his wood stove with wood that he apparently soaked in kerosene the night before," said Chief Duane Bickford of the Fairfield Fire Department.
The garage held a lawn mower, snowblower and other machinery with gas tanks when the fire occurred. Although the fire destroyed the garage and spread to a nearby mobile home and caused severe damage, Ricker was able to avoid injury.
"It's not a good thing to do ... you shouldn't soak your wood in anything. If you want to start a fire in a wood stove, use a little bit of newspaper," Bickford said.
