How do the ports look? No funky shapes? Look for an arch at the top and bottom of the exhaust port, compared to the flat top of the piston. And feel for sharp/jagged edges in the port chamfering

Nothing looks crazy to my untrained eye. The exhaust port has a nice arch in the bottom, and the top is arched, but not quite as much.
The chamfers on the ports feel smooth to me, I can't feel any sharp edges or burrs. The only place I felt a burr was on the little uvula shaped piece in the intake port. It looked like when they beveled it they left a little burr of aluminum. I cleaned that up, gently, when I was working on the bolt holes.

Roof is pretty flat. But it’s ok if the center has a really good bevel

That's pretty!
I've only ever seen a couple of Tecomec's in person, but they looked on par with OEM to me.
Is Tecomec still making P/C kits?

Not sure? I talked to the guy that used to import them (Tilton?) and he said they moved some of manufacturing out of Italy. Not sure how quality has suffered?

Sorry to resurrect a thread with a little age on it, but I finally got back around to the 038 a couple of weeks ago and got it finished up and put together. I have fired it up enough to get the carb roughly dialed in, but haven't had time to put it in any wood to get it fine tuned and get my rings seated yet. There are some before pictures, and finished pictures.

Looking good. Did you refurb the plastics or replace with better condition? I put new covers on my 038 mag not long ago. Really enjoy running mine.

I just refurbed mine- I didn't do a fantastic job, but I thought they turned out ok for a saw that is going to be a worker. I put them in the ultrasonic cleaner with a little simple green, spent a lot of time with 4/0 steel wool, and then rubbed a few layers of polyurethane into the plastic. They aren't anywhere near as bright or shiny as new plastic, but they aren't dark and dirty either. There is still a little drooping over the muffler too.

I really like that wrap handle on your 038! Is it one made for an 038 or was it modified to fit?

You did a pretty good job they look a lot better than before. Drooping over the muffler seems to be pretty common on the 038’s.

I've noticed that too about the drooping, they seem to have that issue. I have seen several that have holes burned plumb through them over the muffler too. Maybe it's because the plastic is so close to the muffler with no sheet metal heat shield in between?

There’s an adhesive backed stick on aluminum foil kind of “heat shield” on the underside of the top cover but they don’t seem to be very effective. If you look at the design of the muffler you’ll see exactly why the top covers droop. The internal baffle essentially concentrates the heat in that area closest to the top cover.
