The "rest of the story", it's a Black Walnut, that won't give up the ghost, Joe.

looks like black walnut with the end cut painted red.

Looks like it sprouted a gas can and a ladder at attached to an old tractor too. Cool!

The ladder is the guide rail for my mil, it will be 3" thick planks soon, Joe.

Black Walnut is just as bad, or worse than Box Elder for sprouting from stumps and logs. I took down several walnut along the NW edge of my yard a couple years back; every stump has grown into a 6-8 foot tall bush. The logs won't sprout if ya' cut the tree in the fall after the leaves have fallen, but if ya' cut them green they'll sprout until the first winter...
