Just for kicks and giggles would there be any harm and putting a longer bar than suggested on a smaller saw if the operater wasn't planning to run it hard? My concern is whether the mounts might be weaker on a smaller saw.

Bar oil could be an issue.

Sometimes the actual bar clamping area will not support a bar much longer than recommended and the bar studs and case might become damaged.

If you are thinking of getting all kinds of crazy about it, sometimes there is not enough chain tensioner space to take up the slack. Some of the itty bitty saws do not have much room. Easy enough to work around.

It is the operators job to keep the mounts as close to neutral as possible. Once the bar is in the tree than the operator should take care of the rest.

Clutch abuse, even though people say they will not bury the bar... When in Rome, ...
