I have a 50 ft. dogwood tree with 3 trunks of which I'll have to cut off one of the trunks for a home addition. We'll also be running foundation within 3 feet of the tree which will more than likely run into roots. Any advise to help protect the remaining tree?

1. Hire a local consulting arborist, for at least one hour.

2. Change your plans. A continuous footing 3' from the trunk will destroy too much of the root system. With a pier-and-post foundation you can bridge over many roots.

3. Invigorate your tree NOW so it has the resources to survive construction. A local certified arborist can help you with this. You can find one, plus a lot of tree care information, at www.isa-arbor.com
