Manitoba Maple Moving

My son has purchased an acrage close to Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The past
owners of the property have planted about 150 Manitoba maple trees that are now about 3 to 4 feet high. He would like to move the trees to new locations through out the 20 acre parcel. He would like some advice on when the best time is to do this. Would it be better to wait till fall or do it this spring after the frost in the ground has melted?

I know this isn't your question, but aren't they sorta trashy trees? Would it be better to use some other trees...in the long run?

Actually the Canadians have come up with some interesting cultivars. Some of the characteristics are upright form, seedless, and varigated leaves. Also the sugar content is quite high, making for a very light colored maple syrup.

On the original subject, I think early spring would be just fine. They are a pretty hardy tree.
