Parts for pressure tester?

Just buy a cheapo blood pressure bulb with valve, and a cheap pressure gauge, and some fuel line.

I got this yesterday and need to use it but it wont make pressure unless you block off the 2 holes in the piston. I have taken it apart and studied it and the only thing I can come up with is that there is supposed to be a check valve under the spring and mine is missing it. I dont know, I never had one of these but if I dont figure it out I am gonna adapt one of my old cooling system pressure testers to test carbs..
