Pin Oak mystery

If it is true that pin oaks don't lose their leaves in the autumn, when do
they do so?

Are there other trees in the Mid-Atlantic region that behave the same way?

Not one of the many books and web sites that I have consulted has treated
this matter at all.

Could you drop me an e-mail if you know the answers? Not even local
arborists are able to solve this mystery.

The family Fagaceae (oaks and beech) tend to retain their leaves through the winter. They drop their leaves in the spring.

Seems to me the red oak subgenus tends to have pwersistant winter leaves more then white oak. Pin being in the red group.

White oaks here hold their leaves, but it tends to be the more juvenile members.

John, I'm new at this website and looking for a variety of oak tree that doesn't lose its leaves in the winteer (other than the pin oak). I live in central / south central. I looked at some red oaks near here, and they hadn't held their leaves as well as the white oaks! What about something called a "swamp oak"? Or any other varieties you may be aware of. Thanks!

Swamp oak is coloquial for many different speicies

Looks like the search does not get into the url on this engine. If so search "swamp oak" for comon name and see the different sp. that turn up.
