One of the problems with cast stoves is the construction: when used for 24/7heating, burned hard, the seams between the plates need re-cementing. The plates need to be completely apart and cleaned for the furnace cement. In this VC Encore from 2000 there are many other parts such as the damper plate, cat box ass'y, seconary air ass'y, and who knows what else until the Encore gets disassembled. Morso cast stoves use FG gasketing for their seams...nice engineering. Why not cement gaskets for the seams of any cast stove ?

The post about an old Hearthstone rebuild sounds like a big, tedious job. I did a VC Vigilant way back; it was a week of PITA: drilling and re-tapping, replacing rods, grinding parts to fit. Plenty of good words, scraped knuckles, good drink in between.

Anyone done a recent rebuild on any cast iron stove ? Tips, techniques, ideas to make the job some easier ?? Better if you've done one of the VC cat stoves like an Encore or Defiant cat.

I haven't done one before, but looking forward to inhaling all those micro particles of creosote and lord knows what the PO burned in the thing. A bucket of cement and a few tubes of Rutland, and let 'er rip.
