I live in northeast Texas and need to plant some shade trees on the west side of my house. I need something fast growing and hardy. The ground here is red sand with good drainage. Any suggestions?

According to my tree planting guide from San Antonio you have a lot to choose from if your conditions are similar.

Chinquapin oak
Pecan
Montezuma Cypress
Cedar Elm
Live oak
Chinese pistache
Arizona Cypress

Over all not really, but as a young tree less than 10 years old, most trees will put on good growth then slow down.

This should hold ya for awhile:

Shumard Oak - Largest of the Red Oaks
White Oak
Post Oak
Black Oak
Willow Oak
American Beech (possibly)
Black Walnut
Southern Bayberry (waxmyrtle)
Eatern Cottonwood
Black Willow
Sassafras
Sweet Gum :( - (gum balls)
American Sycamore
Mesquite
HoneyLocust
Florida Maple
Red Maple
BoxElder (possibly)
Ohio Buckeye
Black Tupelo (possibly)
White Ash
Green Ash

Hope that helps, Will
