Small holes in trunk and branches

My apple trees have a problem. There are small holes in a straight line all around the trunks and branchs of the trees. There are no visible insects but we spray routinely for insects. It starts at the bottom of the tree trunk and circles the entire tree and some of the branches. Any ideas?
