I have recently cut down some hickory trees in my yard and am in the process of digging the stumps out by hand. I found that the hickory has an extensive tap root, I was able to dig it down at least 3 foot and cut it off. The cut off portion has a diameter of about 8" with several roots coming off the side ( now cut). I also cut an "X" in the tap root about 1 foot deep. If I cover this up with soil, should I assume that the root will die, or what could I do to ensure the root will die. Looking for any suggestions.
