Picked this saw up last weekend on Craigslist for a very nice price. Looked like the saw had seen some use as new and then had been stored in a pile of dirt and sawdust. The guy I bought it from let me pull the muffler and have a look at the piston, which looked brand new. Did a compression test which was good.

Brought her home and cleaned her with purple power then used a rubbing compound on the plastic. Replaced the air filter and added a new plug. Scraped and polished the exhaust port (Thanks for the tips Brad) and did a muffler mod (based on some pics posted by Bowtie). The bar had the normal missing paint so a buddy of mine took it to work and put it on his wheel to give it kind of a cool swirled look.

The muffler mod seems to have turned this saw from a "turd" in to my go to saw for a 20" bar.
Last year at this time I never would have considered buying a used saw because I would have had no idea what to look for or how to do any routine fixes or maintenance. Thanks AS!

With the muffler mod I do not see a screen I would not be worried about stuff coming out (sparks whats a little forest fire LOL) but stuff getting in saw dust dirt. Just a suggestion

HittinSteel, congrats on the saw. You have probably did this already, but make sure and retune your saw to compensate for the muffler mod.

+1. I have read here that insects will build nests in mufflers...if the saw is stored long enough.

Thanks guys. I did retune after the mod with my tach to about 13,400 and can here it burble on top still.

Not sure if I will put the screen back in or not. Does it have a noticable effect on flow? If not I'll put it back or if I don't just make sure the hole is covered when stored.

I put the screen back in on mine because our western forests are often very dry-not worth taking a chance in any case IMO. When you're tuning your saw make sure it's warmed up and at operating temp for final adjustment. I also pulled the 3/4 adjust limiters on my 039 carb. I wasn't able to set it rich enough for my liking with the limiters in but I also mill with mine.

Hey Man that is a good looking saw, good deal. I told you that a muffler mod makes a whole new monster come out. How did the other saw turn out after the mod.

Yes it did Possum and thanks to you, Brad and Brian for answering my PM's with various questions. The 260 turned out very well also once I got the :censored: limiter cap out. They both have a real nice pop sound to them with better throttle response and low end grunt.

are you sure about this?
(great score indeed nonetheless.yes.)

It may not smoke a 361 but isn't far behind at all. The 361 needs a muffler mod just as bad as the 390. If a new $600 361 and his $150 039 were put into a log, the 361 owner would be sick to see how close it was.

Good post. Should be some interesting replies :) .
