Saw this ad on local craigslist and figured its well worth the gamble.

Husqvarna Chainsaw 346xp

Looks complete and sounds like it's probably 90% of the way there and they guy probably did somehting like kink or rip the fuel line when he reassembled it.

Thoughts? This is my first saw repair...I feel CAD starting.

LOL, I don't like Huskies and I think I'd be running to that deal.

Get going and post some proof pics afterwards, thats a good deal on a good saw for cheap.

Sam

Seller said he had another guy offer him more but couldn't pick it up today. I said today, set a meeting place and said $75 firm. He also said he's sick of the craigslsit questions looking for more and more pics, the serial number, wanting a detailed list of what he did on it and all that.

I figure for $75 I'll get it in my hands first and ask questions later. Unless its been run over I can probably get it running or part it out and make my money back.

Yay for me!

Got it home. Pics and diagnostics time later. Gotta take the wife out for dinner now.

Thing is CLEAN. Hardly a mark on it. Think it was straight gassed or leaned out.

New saw rep!!!!!!!!

That was a good deal. I wish I could happen upon one for that price.

Sounds like a case of the SECOND BIRD GETS THE WORM! :bang:

I emailed him 24 minutes AFTER he posted....

All I said, was

"Hello,

I'm interested in the saw. I can pickup anytime today, or whenever is convenient for you??

thanks in advance.

Jay "

as with yourself... I didn't give two $h*ts about the serial #, how old it is, work done etc etc...

my suggestion, UNDO EVERYTHING HE DID.... make sure those circlips are seated correctly, and the grooves are deep enough..

you don't want ANOTHER failure.

I'd be interested in the top end you don't use... even if it's scored.

I have plenty to trade, or?

I'm about an hr from you.

good luck with it. looked VERY clean..

Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez!

WHERE did you take the wife for dinner? Bolivia?

Waitin' on those pix!

Up for sale is a Husqvarna 346xp. This saw was given to me because it was not running and the owner did not want to deal with it. I had it looked at and was told the piston and housing was scored. I bought a piston kit for it and attempted to fix it myself, but haven't been able to keep it running. I don't have the time to fool with it, and it's just sitting around. This is a great saw when running....goes for around $500 new. If you are good with small engines might be a simple fix. Also, it does not come with a bar or chain. Send me an email if you are interested or have questions. Looking to get $75 obo. Thanks.

Got a few pics, but my blackberry data cable is at work. I'll see if I can get the pics off tomorrow. Its a 2007 serial number, no green gas cap, so I think no cat in the muffler, right? Looking at the muffler I can't see any obvious exhaust holes like the two big ports on my 359 muffler...how does this thing breathe?

Filter is the hard yellow one...is that the bad one that lets fines through? Wonder if the saw just got nailed by particulates...but I'm thinking with the piston the way it looks, I bet it was straight gassed. Other than the muffler being rusty, it hardly looks like its cut wood...I'm sure the guy cleaned it up when he worked on it, but there aren't really any nicks in the plastic, the stickers look great too. Lucky day today.

Old piston and cylinder are badly scored on the intake side, exhaust is clean as a whistle. I gave it a few test pulls, you can hold the weight of the saw with the pull handle, but it pulls smoothly when I hit the decomp button. Some gas in the tank, bet its bad and the guy either messed up a fuel line or tried to dink with the carb screws when he reassemmbled it. He said he paid about $100 for the jug and slug kit but doesn't recall where he got it other than "its not OEM"...could be chinese crap or it could be a quality kit from Bailey's.

I'll have to dig into it tomorrow.

SawGarage, sorry I nipped it out from under you. Seller said he had one other prospect offering over asking price, but couldn't get it till another day...I wonder why he didn't reply to your message, you e-mailed him earlier.

You're certainly welcome to the old parts when I'm all set, I don't have a need for them. I have some CAD needs now so maybe we can do some horsetrading.

.

those 'ports' on your 359 are bolt-hole sleeves... the exhaust port on that muffler is WAY in the back on the top....(the 359)

the 346 is on the top under the cover...

it will be a non-cat muffler
and an unlimited coil.

Bailey's IS ASIAN made stuff...

does it have similar bulges @ the bottom of the cyl as does the original? it was probably an ebay top end (kafar) it's a 50cc cyl set.

I appreciate you mentioning that i was 1st in line.. you cut me!! :jester: Just foolin'...

I have NO IDEA what happened. I was SURE I happened upon it JUST at the right time. I emailed him just before 1:20, he posted it @ 12:50pm. I figured it may have been a 'lunch break' thing

I HATE WHEN THEY DON'T POST A PHONE #!!!!!!!!! :bang: it's quite annoying playing the waiting game.

I actually wasted a portion of the afternoon waiting for an email..

oh well, milk's already spilt.

I have tons of swede (husky, j-red, partner) parts...as well as stihl and others... so sure  we can do something. I'm just outside worcester.

Hell! I'm happy for you....

Talk soon

That is definitely an AM 50cc P/C. The thickness of the transfer dividers is a give-away. I would guess that it was either straight-gassed, or whatever finished the OEM P/C off was not corrected and the next kit suffered the same fate. You need to check for a metal clamp on the intake. If it has a plastic clamp, this is very likely a culprit and it needs to be replaced with the metal Husky clamp or with an intake clamp from an 044. If you need to do this change, let me know and I can give you the factory SB on doing the mod to accept the new clamp. It is very simple and takes just a couple of minutes once you have the intake in hand.

Metal clamp, pulled the muffler and the exhaust side is shiny and clean looking. Intake side of the cylinder looks equally clean. Pulled the plug, looks clean but was gas soaked. Grounded it and pulled the crank and got spark so I cleaned it up and put it back in. My gap tool doesn't go down to the .020 the manual says is the right spec so its time to get a new gapper anyway since it doesn't go big enough for my wife's car either.

So whats next to check?

I've seen saws so flooded that I had to turn them upside down on the bench and crank them by pulling down on the rope. They would spray fuel all over the floor.

A two-stroke will not start with fuel in the crankcase. If it's very flooded pull the plug and hang it with the plug hole straight down till morning.

Pulled the plug and I got a few drops of gas dripping out of the chamber. Its drying now.

Just for kicks I checked the gap on the plug. I don't think the guy ever gapped it because its close to .040...nearly double the spec. The tip was also very loose, like I'm surprised it didn't come off inside the plug boot when I took it off loose. Hand tightened it and I'll regap it and give it a shot...maybe just pick up a new plug instead.

Are there other air leak places I should check apart from the intake collar? Fuel lines and such? I suspect its getting enough fuel since the chamber was plenty wet with gas.

Thanks!

There is a small impulse line that runs from the cylinder to the intake manifold that could be a leak spot or the cylinder base gasket might be folded or ripped or misaligned is some way. Crankshaft seals may be leaking but that usually isn't a problem with the 346XP. You should do a pressure or vacuum test and see if there are any leaks anywhere.

Not positive of where the impulse line is exactly, but I did a stare and compare with my 359 last night and I think I'm missing a line on the 346.

This pic is of the 346, not the single fuel line that comes up and plugs into the carb...the hole coming out of the fuel tank is an oval large enough for a second line of about the same diameter and I noticed what looks like a fuel line sized nipple in the case right next to the intake manifold.

My 359 has a second line coming out of the fuel tank through an oval hole exactly like the 346, but it goes to a nipple right next to the carb. Not sure what this second line is for, but it looks like something outght to be there on the 346 and it isn't.

View attachment 198845

So is my 346 simply missing this extra line? Is that the impluse line? Or is the impulse line the one in the front that goes under the carb?
