First post here. Have used this site alot to gather information on various saws, I love it. I tore my 55 down and im wondering if my cylinder will be able to be cleaned up and re used. Ill post pictures of of the parts but i believe my comp. release valve was stuck at one time that caused the scoring. Still ran and cut great but the thought of it being that way bothered me. 20170118_182614.jpg 20170118_182541.jpg 20170118_182403.jpg 20170118_182349.jpg

Also Im having a hard time finding out what piston I need. Its an open window piston. Would I be better off going with the 46mm open port piston and cylinder or try n find another piston to fit this cylinder?

The cylinder looks like it will clean up,I would put a new piston and ring in it.
That was my plans but I cannot figure out which piston I need to get. If I search 55 rancher piston everything comes up for open port either 45mm or 46mm.

I'm sorry I don't have a clue where to get a windowed piston for a close port 55,Ive never been lucky enough to come across one.

There is all the numbers I could find. Only info I could find for the cylinder was for a jonsered 490 and it said it was 44mm which is what is confusing me.

Whats the best way to get the carbon cleaned out of dome and get the wall cleaned up? This is the first jug im gonna attemp to save. All other saws i have just gotten new p/c for.

Well maybe i will give that a shot and just order a new ring for it. Whats the best ring i can get? And anyone know a part number for it? Should i sand it to where the scored part is smooth and all the lines are gone?

Just rebuilt a 55 closed port today. My piston was scored slightly less than yours and the cylinder cleaned up well. Make sure your ring groove is cleaned well. Check your end gap clearance with the ring off the piston but in the cylinder. You may find your ring is fine. Buff the scratches off the piston with 400 grit sandpaper but don't take Any more than necessary. Find the reason for the scoring. I put a new intake boot on mine and sealed both ends with Avery light coat of 3bond gasket sealer. I also drilled out the screw holes in the intake partition and cemented theaded inserts so I don't have to worry about stripping the threads any longer.

I have experience with the lil red barn piston in a CP 55. If I were you I'd buy one, it's all of $40ish. Ran one for over a year w/ no problems, then sold the saw. Worked it hard too.

EDIT: not trying to start an erl debate, run some Echo Red Armor and it'll help clean up your carbon build up.

I bought a red barn piston for a CP 55 that Rattler ported for me (double wow). It is a super build, it just hasn't been tested for the long run. I also rebuilt several that looked like yours by cleaning up and reusing the piston, as described above. They work well too and have good compression. If someone hasn't already mentioned it, the cp55 ring is 45mm x 1.5. Don
