They never made a 580 - but they made a 680.

They also made a 550/575/577.

The 550/575/577 cylinders had a 580 cast into them, on the base flange. 550 and 575 had magnesium handles, 577 had nylon. 550 had 3 bolts on the recoil (red), 575 had 4 (black).

Post a picture...we'll let ya know what you have.

And...if you need parts, I have boxes and boxes full.

Here are the pics. Not much wiggle room here if you ask me.

Looks like a 580.:givebeer:

Well...I'm stumped. I have NEVER seen a 580 sticker. That is definitely a factory decal. That may be a prototype saw, or something sold in a different country. I would call their headquarters in Oregon tomorrow and ask someone in the tech department there...maybe an old timer will know. That is definitely a pre-575 saw. The red recoil gives it away...I couldn't tell from the pictures, but I bet the recoil only has 3 bolts holding it on. Shindaiwa has nothing listed on their website! Neat find!

My guess is a 57cc saw - measure the bore.

That "Dec 85" etched into the saw seems to be pretty suggestive about it's age.

Find a dealer, they should be able to get any parts.

I like my 577. The 757 won't hold the muffler bolts.

I like my 577's, too! Like the 757's more, and the 695's the most. Never had a problem with the muffler on a 757 coming loose...you must have used Husky screws - HAHAHAHA. Try some loc-tite and star washers if you really can't keep them in place.

That '580' has all the same features of a 550 or 680.

new bolts, Red loctite, dinged threads, new cylinder (eventually).

Nothing seems to keep it on long enough. Cuts like crazy, I like it as well as our Husqy 272. Doesn't turn as fast, but seems to have more power.

That'll probably get some folks stirred up.

That's a new one for me, too.

I can remember at least on 757 come in with chronically loose muffler bolts. Lock washers & blue loctite, I haven't seen or heard from the owner since.

580 update

I just talked to a very nice gentleman from the Oregon office and he said that the 580 was not sold in the US. It may have been a prototype that some dealers had, but who knows? Mid 80's is right. Probably the rarest saw I will ever find!
It is next on my "get it running" list. The guy I spoke with said parts would be VERY difficult to find.

Did he give you any specs on this saw such as horsepower, etc.?

Just curious.

I should have checked, but I only had a few minutes and to be honest, I was only after finding out why I wasn't able to find out much about it. He did say that any information about it would not be in English, if I could find it.

He asked if I had pictures and I told him to look here. I will call them again to make sure I find out what I can about the saw. It would be good to get this information to Mike Acres so he can put it on his site.

Is that the serial number plate in front of the handle? 60001, or 60001x? Lots of zeros there. Reminds me of the time I got a bunch of old Crosman airguns from the collection of a former factory employee. Some of the serial numbers were xx0001. I later learned that in many instances he had been given the first one off the line.

Serial number is 6000138.

Well, I have a NOS piston and cylinder kit with 580 stamped on the side of it. I am also willing to bet $5 that most, if not ALL of the parts from a 550/680 will fit that saw...of which I have boxes full. Pop the covers off, take some detailed pictures of what is underneath.

Cool saw no doubt...the rarest thing on it is the almost new looking 580 sticker.

Considering the size of the saw, it is interesting that it has safety chain on it. Semi-chisel with the bumpers. Kind of a waste of that size saw. I will take some pics in the next few days. Hopefully, this thing won't need more than a carb kit and clean up.

Some teardown pics

Here are some pics as I started the teardown. The carb was lying underneath the wire air cleaner. I don't know exactly how it was setup as far as if there was any attachment to the choke end of the carb. It uses a Walbro carb. Clutch cover is missing the guts and has a big crack in it. Pulls 145 lbs. of compression. Has good spark.

I might need to find some parts. Do any of these look similar to the saws you have, Four Paws? I am thinking that there was maybe an air filter inside the wire mesh one. That mesh looks like metal window screen. Should have taken a pic of that. I will do that when I take more. You can see some of the mesh in the one picture.

Looks like you are missing a few parts in the air-box - Those saws all had 2 filters, out coarse mesh, inner fine mesh or flocked filter.

How many recoil bolts?

Picture of the muffler?

Those two bits of info will tell me if it is a 550/680 family saw, or 575/695. Looks like it has a 575/695 tank on it.

Either way, download the 550/680 or 575/695 IPL from Shindaiwa's website and you will be in business.
