OK, OK!!!! I have been running mine for over a year now, no problems. No cir-clip problems, no ring failures, no meltdowns.
I am still happy with my BB kit, and happy with the way the saw runs.
Does that make me a bad person?
Not at all, I hope to hear more good things and not all the bad things I have been hearing about the BB kits.

See I learn something new everyday! Now what are you doing with a Stihl Arctic in AL, lol

It can get cold here in AL. LOL (not really) I got it used. Didn't even know that it was an arctic until I got the saw. never have try the heater before

well, I took out my other 044 to finish up the job. Used same mixed gas and no problem from the gas so it wasn't the gas/oil.

I have bought and used after-market twice now and both were failures. I am not going to say where they came from but one was a 372 BB and the other was a 262 piston & cylinder. Neither one lasted very long, both puked rings. I am in the process of re-doing both with OEM.
I have rebuilt 3 other saws this year with OEM with no problems. No more of this junk for me. The Chinese ought to find a better way to feed their starving people instead of sending us their junk products.
It ends up costing you more money than if you had used the good stuff to begin with.

As much as I agree with you, we are the dorks who buy the junk. You've got a lot of work to do to get the masses detoxed of all that Chinese junk. They are good and hooked and lazy to boot.

I'll go stand in the corner with Andy.

But.. yours is the old version.. before it was "improved" (nikersil, rings etc).

. May be using the OEM rings might be a good solution. I'll keep you guys updated.

What it is not the actual rings, but they are catching on the ports... or the nikersil pealed a little and jambed the rings... or the piston is oversized, or the bore oval (all these defects have been reported on their aftermarket parts...).

In any case, seems backwards to buy a chicom (o.k. Taiwan, but who cares... the quality doesn't seem any better) cylinder, then fit oem rings at$45-$50, oem clips and.. and...

Ask Baileys to sell you an OEM 046 or stock 044 set at their cost... about 40% off list.

I'll ask about it on Monday.

I did take measurements before assemble and I thought the kit was acceptable for what I gathered. The bore was around, the piston was pretty tight at 001"-002" clearance between the skirt and the bottom of the cylinder. The top of the piston, I can't remember the number, but was tapered enough for thermal expansion.
At least I thought.

Actually took it a part to check for any sign of damage or misfit but didn't fine nothing wrong with it night before.

You are right though, I should go OEM and call it a day. I was curious to know if there was benefit to go 16% more displacement. I had to give a try.

Sad but true. I think I lost a lower ring on my 044/046BB. I was sawing against a graining on a dry white oak. The saw was 4 stroking through the cut but before I could do anything it locked up. Found pieces of ring in the muffler and it was all she wrote.

Ouch, man that looks like hell. I've never tried BB kits, only OEM. Never had a problem. How long did that set up run before she let go??

Also are those two rings with grooves in them or is that 4 thin rings with two in each groove?, never seen rings like that...

ahhh, 2 weeks............. Just enough to break in and it was on 5-6 tank? (something close to that).

Like I said on the last post, I just took it apart for post break in check. Couldn't find nothing wrong with it then.

2 weeks, 5-6 tanks, hmmmm f-ck that. Had to be a defect somewhere in the material to last only that long and then all sudden kaboom.

I'd say ya got a bad kit there. They should make it good but as far as your time goes they can't replace that. I'd get a OEM kit and put on that saw and be done with it..

It's the new grooved rings came with the BB kit. So 2 rings.

Awww ok. Thats a odd looking ring. I'm trying to figure out what the groove is for. It looks like two thin rings together, never seen rings like that..

It seems only possible that tight clearance and heat were the demise of the cylinder. It does not seem possible that the top ring would pass the exhaust port and the bottom ring would catch.

Having read part I of the discussion on this saw. What are the thoughts about the case volume and or porting work combined with case volume being potential reasons for failures?

I know for sure that the intake or transfer ports did not catch the ring. No damage what so ever there on the jug or the piston. As far as the case volume goes, I don't know if it can cause it to take out the ring. The damage on the jug is on the lower part of exhaust port. Something happened on the down stroke after combustion.

My place of employment just bought two new radial drill presses like this one:

Made in Taiwan. Over $40,000 each. Pieces of junk IMHO. The presses they are replacing are 40+ year old Rabomas made in Germany. I'll bet these things don't go 10 years without needing major work. Why?
