Oil settling issue

no there's nothing hard about it...and I have always done it too. There are people saying that it can't seperate and my point was that if that is true then why do saw instructions tell you to shake it before every refueling Robb

Oil won't settle out, but gasoline will evaporate. If it condenses on top and falls back in, the top will slowly become lean in oil and the bottom rich. As suggested, picking the saw up will likely be enough to remix it.
 
Fuel Test

Ok.......this may prove nothing but I'm interested in KNOWING that m oil won't seperate or how long it takes to separate. So here is a quart of my gas/oil mixture that I run. This is oregon "only one" oil and 93 octane. We'll see what happens.....perhaps nothing. Robb

Back in the early 80s a guy brought in a Suzuki RM125, it would start and idle but would die if you gave it any throttle at all. I told him it sounded like he had water in his carb which I've seen a thousand times... only it was'nt water, it was a glob of BelRay MC-1 oil that had seperated from the gas, when you hit the throttle it sucked the glob of oil up against the main jet and died.

In the thousands of dirt bikes I've worked on over the years this is the one and only time I've seen oil seperate and I'm not sure what caused it.
In the early 80's I raced enduro's in Michigan. I was experimenting with Avgas and different oils. I dont know what caused it but I mixed some fuel up. I pretty sure it was Castor Oil and Avgas. I dumped it into bike and seized it up lightly when I took it down the trail to warm it up before the race. I didn't know what was wrong. I took carb apart and found straight oil in the bowl. Did not even mix. I drained it out. Took cylinder off. Freed up rings, and borrowed some gas and made the run. Stuck with Sunoco gas after that and never had another problem. Dont know! I blamed it on the AVGAS!
 
The only additive that I can think of that wont mix with most 2 cycle oil would be Ethynol or Methynol, which are not comon in Av-gas or most race gas, however some castor based 2 cycle oils are soluable with Ethynol or Methynol. It would make since that in cold climates a alcohol additive might be used, to prevent icing. To be on the safe side take a jar of your Av-gas or race gas and mix some of your favorite 2 cycle oil, shake it up and see if it seperates. Dont be afraid of high octane fuels they wont hurt your motor.

I ran district 14 MX and scrambles from 77' through 84' , and had a 80' KDX-175 gel up soon after filling up with sled gas at Kaderabics. Didn't even think about it much untill the next day when I seized the mill. Crank Bearing:cry: .
I was running Bel-Ray MC1 at the time mixed at 50-1 and generally ran the old Leaded 93 from Shell. I just figured someone in camp had spiked my tank, but one of the Sharphorns (Neil I think... don't remember) told me I was a dumb Kid for even thinking about the sled gas that had sat in the tank since winter. LOL!!!
Never has happened since in anything I have run.

Castor oil will fall out of suspension in temperatures below 35F and some of the early esters had moisture problems. However today's modern 2 cycle lubricants will stay in suspension indefinitely. The real problem is the fuel itself. If you use good fresh fuel you shouldn't have any problems.

What does a cold scored piston look like compared to lean seize or old gas?
Anyone have any pics?
 
Engines Seized

WOW, This thread did open up a can of worms or should I say OIL.

In my earlier post, about the motorcycle engines seizing I want to clarify some things.

1. I don't know the brand of oil. But it was a premium synthetic motorcycle 2 stroke oil.

2. Knowing the county where this happened, the gas was probably an ethynol blend.

3. These bike did set idle for the winter months, and seized after startup in the Spring.

4. It wasn't a matter of the gasoline evaporating, there was plenty of gas. not.

5. I'm trying to run down the exact company of that Synthetic Oil. After I posted that thead, I talked to 2 others that has problems after a long lay up, say 4 months or more, over winter, in the cold.

6. And yes I always tell my wife to shake the jugs.
 
i think your refrigerator freezer only gets down around 20. you might put a thermomiter in there and find out

It is in my chest freezer and that is exactly 0 most of the time. It looks to me like the oil that I'm using is gonna be just fine as far as not seperating. I'm still not convinced that none of them will seperate. I think some do. I would be willing to bet that the synthetics are the culprits........Robb

Castor Oil in cold weather WILL separate. It says it right on the bottle!!
