Finished fellin this one last friday,,and finally the weather is gettin good here for milling...I been thinkin about milling this one with the mini mill onto slabs for fireplace mantles...Was wanting to mill it 6 foot by 2 foot but wondering how thick I could get by with....
The limbs are so bg,,gonna get some good boards frm it too.....Just wondering if you think I should do that or cut into boards with it all...

If I had to guess from the bark and the red saw dust, I would say some nice Red Oak ya got there............

I would cut a couple of 5" thick rounds off the butt and make some end tables too. Nice shape to the butt end of that log.

Going to make a sweet mantle also..

That looks like locust. If so it will take twice as long to dry as anything else. I have had good results drying wide locust in 2"-3" thick slabs. it will move a fair bit if milled in thiner boards. don't be afraid to mill the limbs if you do them up thick. once dry the wood is very stable but if you try to use it before it is bone dry it will move around alot.

Sorry it's been a few days since I got back..

I was wondering if it was red oak,,but it's not porous enough,,really tight grain,,wasnt any leaves around to tell so I showed a small piece to someone I work with and they said black oak...
I didnt even think of makin tables out of the butt end,,,thats a great idea!! I still like to get a couple of mantles frm it,,replace the one I have ..
Milled some of the limbs yesterday,,and forgot my cam,,,hope to mill more tomorrow and try to get pics...
Oh,,about the suspenders...LOL!! Wearing Swedpro pants,,,just wearin a belt to hold em up dont cut it...They are heavy,and I'm not much on mooning people...LOL!! Thanks you all for the tips...

Took a few pics. and got a vid of the mini mill too...That is such a neat little device...Saved me alot of time,,and can go back with the alaskan later on ,,but just glad I got this wood home with me and the job done for my friends neighbor....

What surprised me is that wood looks like it's laminated...The big limbs look totaly diffrent.....
I'm so worn out,,that stuff was heavy!!!!! I gotta find me a fork truck somewheres....

Great work!! Thats unbelievable grain pattern going there. I don't know what kind of wood it is, but I never seen a red oak that looked like that! lol
I feel your pain! Wish I would have got into this milling, when I was younger.

It suppose to be black oak ,,,I am wondering after I seen the grain,,but the limbs are dark,,,wet,,it is almost dark like walnut...I am kinda confused since there is no leaves....
I wished I got into millin years ago myself...Trown alot of good wood in the fireplace and turned to ash....
Was this tree worth milling?? I thought so soon as I seen it...Kinda long story behind it I posted in the chainsaw forum cause it was a friends neighbor tree and he paid the man 700 dollars to remove it,,and 2 other small ones...He cut for 1 day and never showed back up....I felt bad for what he been tru....I heard of that happing so many times,,and I took that job just for the wood...He was worried I would charge him I said why???I love doin this....It was hard work,,but to me worth it...

Nice work! I'm looking at the photos but not sure what kind of wood. Its not black locust, doesn't look like oak to me. What is the possibility of it being English Walnut?

Are there any stems around from last years leaves?? It could be butternut?? I was thinking KY coffee tree, but its not brown enough. The grain looks a lot like honey locust, but from the vid it seems too soft!! HAHA. Honey locust is pretty unmistakable by the huge thorns though. If it weren't for the color, I'd say it might be mulberry or hedge apple(osage orange), but either of those should be much more yellow when freshly milled, then they get a nice brown/orange as they are exposed to light.

The presence of thorns would help identify it as honey locust but the absence of thorns dosen't preclude it from being honey locust. There are several cultivars of locust that have minimal or even a complete absence of thorns.

One way to help id the species is to take a 1"-2" long chip and dry it in a microwave. hold it up to your mouth and see if you can blow air through it. this will tell you if there are tylosis in the wood. Locust has them while red oak doesn't, and black oak is a type of red oak. White oak also has tyloses so if you have a dry sample of red oak and one of white oak you will be able to use these as controls to see how much air you should be able to blow through a piece of wood. I forgot to mention that you blow through the end grain.

I never thought of it, but yeah, oak does smell like chicken coop..........

Buddy of mine allways says Red Oak smells like cow manure, lol chicken, cow...? I can smell your point though.LOL Stipes..are you sure your not in Austrailia? That wood looks alot like the stuff that BobL mills down under.

Butternut, aka "white walnut" isn't terribly common here. The butternut wood that I've seen doesn't look like that.

I helped cut a sassafras into firewood on Saturday, and it was dark in the middle with much lighter sap wood outside. Now that I've looked at the pictures again, and thinking about the wood that we split, I'll go with sassafras.
