Hi, I can get delivered for free a 44" diameter oak tree trunk 10 feet long, also some huge limbs from it, the limbs I can handle but I would need to buy a 25" bar and chain for my 361 to cut up the trunk, how do i calculate how much wood i would get from trunk, the crain operator who picked it up thinks it weighs about 10000 pounds could this be right???

Hey CT Just finished cutting up a large white oak ( nine pick up loads)- it was 38" diameter 25' up the trunk-it was 48" at the bae. We used saws with 20" inch bars and cut thru the logs fine, had to roll the logs with peaveys to cut thru and took three of us to do so. With a shorter bar -you have to roll log and sometimes you can cut without rolling log and use wedges to bust the log apart but its best when you can roll the log. You need a good size saw to cut these logs- we used 80 cc saws-a 60cc saw would work-slower- but those large logs need more power.

If you work from one end, you can quarter the round without moving the log. If you have a bar shorter than 24", then you can make a cut at:
9o'clock to 3o'clock

then cut three even pieces from the top half,

then cut the round to length....the top three pieces will fall away.

Repeat from the middle down through the half round, then cut away from the log.

You will end up with pieces that can be manhandled a little easier than quarters, and plenty of noodles. It's a bit tedious, but as long as your chain is kept sharp, then it goes pretty quick.

Have fun.

If you decide to pass on the trunk, please let me know. I have the ability to pick it up and the saws to handle it.

Thanks.

let me know, I have an 066 coming to me soon and if you want I might be willing to assist, depending on where you are..

Tree weight

It's always fun trying to figure the weight of a tree or parts of a tree. I copied an article a few years ago that discussed various tree weights in detail. Live vs. dead and different diameters, however nothing over 36". I don't have it with me but I do remember what it said about Oak, because that's what we predominately cut in this area. A 36" diameter live oak, one foot thick weighs 500 pounds. Knowing this I would estimate your 44" x 1' weighs about 611 pounds. So the entire 10 foot length would be about 6110 pounds.

Well 1/2 of the tree came today, the rest next week, This will keep me busy for a weekend,

try this one looks like about 6000 lbs - should be at least a cord maybe 1 1/2

Thanks for the Chart

We just about neighbors, i am in Stonington:greenchainsaw:

Trees that have been craned, have a good chance of holding metal (nails, bolts, wire, etc).

Be safe.

there are a couple bolts

mmmmm i need to find a tree like that. i got a 36" bar for my 066 :D

that would slice and dice it

Based on this chart, 10,000 .lbs sounds a little high. An oak 36" in diameter would weigh about 4,500 .lbs for a 10 foot long section. Chart doesn't show diameter up to 44". Either way, it ain't light.

thanks

good god :jawdrop::jawdrop: what a score i would use my 460 with a 28" bar but that is me if i only had my 270 i would use it. it would take a while but it would get cut. i run the 20" bar and rsc chain, just dig in and don't let up till she's bucked up:cheers:

I agree. A 25" bar on a 361 is not the way too go. The saw is not gonna pull that in oak. 20" at the most is what I'd go with and lots of sharp chains.

I am going to use my 361 with rsc chain, also have full skip chain I may try out, i would love to drive a mile down the road and buy a new 660 but i gotta be good

what do you think of using full skip chain???:greenchainsaw:

i like skip cahin cuts fast but dulls faster. if the wood is clan try the skip. though i have never run a 361 i have ran skips on my 460 and i liked them just how hard you dog into the wood them skips are agressive:chainsaw:
