Stihl dealer wouldn't sell me an MS 200

Hello, This is my first post, but I have looked in here occasionally for a quite a while now.

Here is what prompts me to register and post. I came into a little free money and wanted to blow it on something fun. I wanted a Stihl MS 200. The rear handled version, not the top handled one. Given the limited amount of cutting I do I really have no need for a $600 saw. But need doesn't really matter here, I just want it.

When in high school and college I worked on a tree farm and really liked using the 020 (I think that was the number). Now I need a little saw to do some trimming work, and for cleaning up a little bit that has been blown down. And so I thought, even though the ms 200 is ridiculously priced at $629 I would just use some of that check I got in the mail and splurge on an upgrade to the ms 200.

Problem is the dealer wouldn't sell it to me. Said it was more saw than I need. Those saws are really for professionals he tells me. I thought he was confused and said that I was not wanting the top handled version. I wanted the rear one. Didn't matter, I really didn't need a professional saw like that. He pointed out that I could get three of some other models for that price. He also said for less money I could get a ms 260 pro, which in his opinion, was a better saw and would be more versatile. I said that may be but my dad has a 026 which I can conveniently use whenever I want, so I really don't need a 260. I just want a really light saw.

He just wouldn't budge. Kept trying to sell me something else. I pointed out how the catalog lists the ms 200 as a "for occasional use" saw. Didn't phase him.

Since he didn't have one in stock, and he couldn't order again until after the weekend, he said I should think about it over the weekend.

Now I am miffed and don't want to buy from him...

I appreciate that he was just trying to match the saw to my needs, but I think he could have warned me I was wasting my money and then sold me the saw. Sheesh.

What would cause someone to work so hard not to sell me a saw? Is there no profit in the ms 200 for the dealer? Is there some problem with the ms 200?

(Just for the record I am 37 years old, 5'11 and 175. I am in reasonably good shape. And, as I say, I have spent quite a few hours running chainsaws.)
 
It is simple math

He wanted to sell you something from his inventory.. May not have been his best move in this case.. But I am sure he figures if he can make a for sure sale now.. Will beat a Maybe next week.

That could be, but he ended up losing a sale, and also future business... I'll find someone who will sell it to me.


(On a side note the guy is also the only Kubota dealer in the area. My father-in-law recently purchased 90 acres to give to us - so my daughters can keep horses. I need the saw to do a little trimming, but will be wanting a tractor when I can save up the funds. A Kubota would be about right, but they look less attractive now.)

I don't know if putting some cash down until the saw arrives would help.

I had cash and just expected I would have to pay before he placed the order. Isn't that how it works?

I'm sure you told him you had the cash to pay upfront...to bad for him.

I'm not sure on what Stihl requires as far as ordering saws...might have to order more than one at a time.

He's an idiot. You came in wanting a certain saw, and he went further than just suggesting something else. Frankly, it's none of his got damned business what you want to use it for. You need to buy the saw somewhere else, and then take it to his place and show it off in front of him. I also find it highly unlikely that he has to wait until next week to order. That's unreasonable.
 
I advice customers on what would be best, but money talks. I had a guy earlier this week who was dead set on buying a MS880.
He's not a commercial user just cutting firewood, his current saw is a 60cc Poulan Pro, so a 880 is a huge jump. I told him a 460 or 660
would be more than adequate for the work he was looking to do. After showing him options, he says " I want a 880 with a 25" and 47" bars a couple extra chains,
and I'm willing to pre-pay with cash", those were the magic words.
A dealer can help and advise, but I'll never refuse to sell a customer a saw unless,
they are obviously inexperienced, or going to use it a way that will cause physical or property damage.
 
Say no to a saw sale in this economy? Is that dealer INSANE??? Geez... there are over a dozen Stihl dealers near here, and I would just hop over to another one if that happened to me. Never had one say no to money though. Ever. I had one snub me on a parts order, so I do not go to Roy-Boys any more.

I can give him the name of a local dealer that's STUPID as well. They could go drink themselves silly together 'cause I doubt either has any buds.

I'd change my dealer before I'd change my mind,

I think the guy has it right that says the dealer wanted to unload stock on hand.

The economy is tough, he's not sure if he's making enough money right now on saws, and like as not he doesn't want to special order just one unit in. Distributor stabs him deep on freight, and if he's behind, maybe a C.O.D. too.

But there's always a way around that...be honest about it. Heck, maybe you're still willing to pay full monte for a special order, what does it matter? Too bad, cause I'm sure there's enough profit in a 200 at full retail to make it worth a phone call.

Even if he has to call the guy in the next town to find one, at least he has a crack at you for parts and accesories.
