When cuttin' the hardwoods out here, there is no real change as far as I can tell... When I get to the stump of a BIG Leaf Maple, or a Tulip...

I'm sure you know this, but Tulip poplar and Maple are mush compared to real hard wood like Beech, Hickory, Locust. It's not even funny how much harder they are.

Sure a stock 70cc saw can pull a 30" bar in a block of Hickory, but it's going to be slow going and relatively inefficient. Sure if I was out west I'd probably run 28"+ bars on all of my saws, the trees are simply larger and for the most part softer. That's just the way it is.:)

I completely agree.

Yessir, yessir, three bags full... :)

Always amazes me at how people still get all bent about longer bars on "small" saws. Come out here and do it our way... you'd be suprised... just like if I went over there and did it someone elses way (shorter bars). I would get a schoolin'... :)

Good post!

I dont get bent out of shape about it LOL. I just think what works for you in your area , and I trust it does! Is not what works for me in my area!
It all depends, but its like I said earlier most people who run a saw much know what works for what they do. Then you have some that don't know what works they just follow the rest !

Ah yes, down here in the 'GREAT PACIFIC SOUTH WEST' we don't piss around with puny under-powered over-length chainsaws, anything consistently bigger than 24" across, then it's 395/066 territory.

Big cc saws always do the job faster, stronger and easier, the flimsy 044's, 372's and 046's don't impress in big stuff at all. If the trees truly are whoppers, at the end of the day a grunty saw with long bar is way less strain and hassle all-round.

Jeez if us PSW crowd came up there working, within about 6 months the whole of the PNW would be clear felled with not a tree left standin':chainsawguy:
