Yesterday was Niks 38th birthday. Ironically enough, he left his 361 with me Saturday night to give a port job. I got started on it after work this evening and the work is done . I thought I'd show a few pics of the work. Sorry, no video. I don't have a stick of wood to cut here right now. Maybe tomorrow evening.

Here's the subject. It's a well used MS361 worksaw he recently picked up for a good price. It's one of the best running stock 361s around. The internals were in great condition so I got to work.

Here are some before pictures with my work laid out in tape so that you can see how much material was removed.

LOTS of room to widen the exhaust. Watch out for the one ring that ends on one side of the port.

Less room to widen the intake. You can see that I'm lowering it a few degrees.

The stock piston.

Time for the finished pics.

You can see here that I did not raise the exhaust port at all, just widened it.

Here's the intake and rear transfers. I purposely leave the finish of the carbide burr on the intake. I really like to widen those rear transfers. I also raised them a degree or two, just a little.

I don't do as much work to the exhaust side transfers.

I finish the exhaust out to 400 grit. A polish isn't required, but smooth and straight is.

The piston windows are opend significantly and tapered for better flow.

And finally...the muffler mod. The cage is opened up by going through the rear of the muffler. The muffler, gasket, and heat shield are all port matched to the cylinder. I then add the additional port and use a Husky deflector. A spark arrestor screen can be added if he so chooses.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NIK!!!

OOOhhh ooohhhh I want one! My birthday can be any day you like. I can't wait to see a video of that thing run. What rpm did it tach out at?

Ok Brad I got an idea. Lets say you raffle off your services. One dollar a chance and how ever many chances you see fit. The winner pays for shipping of their saw to your location. I know I'd buy into that one for sure. Lots better odds than the lotto.
Whatdaya think?<a href="http://www.sweetim.com/s.asp?im=gen&lpver=3&ref=11" target="_blank"><img src="http://cdn.content.sweetim.com/sim/cpie/emoticons/00020408.gif" border="0" title="Click to get more." ></a>

Wow, what a great present for Nik, I bet he's doin' the diaper dance over that one!

Nice work Brad, please do post a video when you get a chance. ;)

NOW you've done it!!!!!

We won't be able to live with his Xtra large happy butt now!

It MAY be able to hang with a 30 year old Poulan now!!!:jawdrop:

The work looks great as usual Brad !

I can't wait until I save up enough to have you do one for me.
(We can't ALL be machinists)

Brad I was alwys told that the exhaust gets polish as well as can be and the intake is left rough.

Thats what I thought, but what do I know :dunno:

A polish is good, but not required IMHO. I don't think you'd be able to measure the difference in performance. There comes a point of diminishing returns and I only take it up to 400 grit any more. That's a lot smoother than these close up pics make it look.

That was nice of you brad!! I'm anxious to see some video. Its better to give than receive. Unless its a shiny new pop up piston LOL

Not in performance now but in carbon retention later, which will affect performance down the road. ;)
