if you can find any cheeko-root (slang round here for an ole cedar stump at least 20 yrs old since last cut, dry as can be, plunge it make your vent then add some instant mashed potatoes or instant coffee into the centre and and you have a Scandavia-roman-candle-with cool colours!

Hamish~ I was thinking the same thing including putting a grill on top once it gets down to embers for burgers/steaks.

SlowP~ I used a 12 inch piece of beetle kill pine.I found a double chain width vent or make an inverted T.My buddy was thinkin do a bunch and sell them.Anf for a novelty add in one of those colored flame packets.

Bubbles..........even up here in my igloo instant coffee is way cheaper then coloured flame packets! Think about the return on your investment, you cut wood anyways and drink coffee.......too bad beer doesn't make pretty flames the women like.....

Instant Mashed potatoes and instant coffee??? Instant Mash is a staple in my camping diet-What in John Diefenbaker is in them to turn the flame colour,What flames do each of them turn.
I found this:

Use duct tape lay a piece of duct tape out- about a 3-4″ strip- put a few spoonful of ONE chemical of your choice on the tape and fold over- making sure edges are sealed. DO NOT MIX THESE CHEMICALS- EVER!!!!!
When ready to add to fire- just toss the whole packet in :)

Copper Chloride : makes a BLUE flame, Can be found at Fire Work chemical companies- my favourite is SkyLighter.com

Borax : Light yellow-Green Flame (but this at any supermarket in laundry section)

Copper Sulfate: makes a green flame in campfire. Buy in pool/spa chemical store or Fireplace store.

Lithium Chloride: bright pink/red flame . Can buy here http://secure.sciencecompany.com/Strontium-Chloride-100g-P15973C672.aspx

Salt Peter:(potassium nitrate).For a violet-purple flame.

Epsom salt(Magnesium Sulfate}makes a bight white flame in campfires- buy pretty much anywhere.

Strontium Chloride: makes red flame in campfire. Stores specializing in fireworks chemicals.
also here : http://secure.sciencecompany.com/Strontium-Chloride-100g-P15973C672.aspx

Potassium Chloride: makes a deep purple flame in campfire. Sold as a water softener salt and starter fertilizer in most gardening sections..

Alum (thallium): a nice bright green flame in campfire. Used for pickling but can also buy cheap at drugstore- ask pharmacist.

Calcium Chloride : nice blue flame - is sold commercially as the product ” Damp-Rid” to get rid of moisture.

Table Salt (sodium chloride)- make an orange flame.

Boric Acid - deep red flame. Buy at any pharmacy.

Bubbles- I cant remember but do know they are both flamable and make coulours..........too many years of heating army rations over any kind of flame and playing with my food, from what i remember instant coffee makes snapping noises alot and the instant mashed is green and yellow flames......and beer just douses the fire and makes alot of smoke.

Geesh instant mashed potatoes must contain Borax!! what the hell is borax? Just joking

I was at my buddies parents cabin ,his mom wanted a small fire. The axe handle was broken, from beating rounds. I went to the truck pulled out the Rippin Ronny(camping saw) a few plunge cuts later.Needless to say "Mom" was happy she got her fire!

That is cool. Can u go into a little more detail about how to make one of these. How deep, how to set the vent and where, and what is burning, the wood itself or is something else used in the hole to get it going ?
Thanks,

Go out hunt down a piece 12-16 inches across. Do a plunge cut about on each of the 4 sides about 12 inches deep .You will have to cut an a box out of the center then go make the 4 sides the same depth. Then on the outside of the log cut in to release the center [].make that cut 2 chain widths wide. grab a good couple hand fulls of "noodles" and place it in the hollowed center box. In the 2 chain width cut at the bottom light with match or bbq lighter.

Thank you sir,
Gonna try it tommorow with the family. My daughter is excited.

Guido Salvage~ The bottom cut to release the center box is a single with cut with an inverted T as a second plunge cut.Normally they are just side by side(double chain width cut)

Very nice. Must have missed this before. I'll have to play with one of these next week when we go to camp. Rep for Bubbles Up.

You tube has a page or two on it but the ones they show are cut differently. The one bubbles showed looks more complicated to make, but looked nicer too. I'm still not sure which one we're gonna do today.
I repped him as well for sharing it and not being "one of dem guys" who treated it like it was a matter of national security.
Stew.
