Is the Stihl 441 more popular than the 460? Sure seems like it here.

I'm a newb here, but it sure seems like the 044/440/441 gets a pile of great reviews and the 460 doesn't even get an honorable mention. I have an 046, but from what I have been reading here, it sure sounds like I need to add a 44 series to the rest of my junk.

The Stihl website lists the 441 at 14.6 pounds and 5.5 horse power and the 460 hits the same weight but with an additional 1/2 horse. Seems odd with these numbers that the 441 is more popular.

Obviously, I am missing something here.

Nope, you got it right, just depends on the day. One day the 441 will be popular the next it is the 460. I personally like the 441 with its anti vibe, I'm used to old Homelites vibrating my arms numb so it is a nice change to handle a 441. Would I buy a 460? Heck yes, CAD you know.

A lot of members say that they perform about the same, but I suspect that has something to do with the size etc. of the wood they are "tested" in.......:pirate:

The MS441 is an EPA regulated, waste of a good saw. Great on fuel but very strange feeling anti-vibe (like a water bed) and low power without mods.
The 044/440 is a very different beast. Great saw. Some swear by them but IMHO It's not different enough than your 460 to need to have one of each. (unless of course, you want to)

I guess I'm getting old. For some reason I really enjoy that "water bed" smoothness of the 441, I consider it my cadillac saw. What I don't understand is this supposed lack of power, I step on the gas and it goes like a bat out of hell, I also have a 066 so I know what power is.

Lots of Different Opinions on the 441

I have a 460, and would rather use it than the 441. The 460 is a solid, reliable machine.

Here is my experience: I got a 441 when they first came out. I had the wrap model; about the only way they come here. I had a lot of problems with it, including hard starting, idling problems, and what felt like really loose AV springs. I bought it at one of the biggest logging shops in the NW, so the folks really knew what they were doing there. I had it back to the shop more than a few times. I finally gave up on it about a year later.

I've read here how much some folks really love them, including some reputable hard working loggers on this site. That same shop that I bought my 441 at a few years back refuses to even carry the 441 in stock today, and they move a LOT of Stihl and Husky saws. I trust them. The other big shop that I go to carries them, but steers me away from the 441 due to problems they've had. For this reason I haven't picked another one up.

Why the big difference of opinion? Maybe the first year or two Stihl hadn't worked the bugs out. Maybe here in the mountains the altitude changes cause problems with them, and that rep lingers today. I love my big Huskies, and was initially excited about the 441. Here's what may move people towards them again.

The 440 is long gone, the 372XP/XPW is recently gone with the non-strato engine, and the bigger Dolmars are getting very expensive. The 460 is a fine saw, but bothers some (me included) after using them all day as they are not as comfortable to use as a 372/7300/7900/441. The jury is out on the new 372's engine, so we'll see how that goes.

I have none, as I never used that model. :sleepy:

See,,,,, I told ya!!!!!! I knew I should have bet on that one!!!!

I have a couple of them one is a big bore kit I did my first woods port job on and I run an Oregon light weight 32" or 28" bar on I love it for falling and bucking good around saw

the vibes are nowhere close to a 35cc wildthing , pretty damn good for a 77cc saw
i havnt run a 372 though but im sure its superior in all ways, especially sideways balance :messed:

I really like my 460 but wouldn't turn down a 044/440, on a new saw I think I would skip the 441 and go 460.

Forgot to say - the 460 is almost "world famous" for bad vibration levels, that many can't handle.

Really, its almost world famous, ha, get real Sawtroll, you know better than that. I think your getting world famous for spreading BS but hey if you wanna be star do whatcha gotta do, we know, sales are down,LOLOL

I just know that many members have complained about it, and I refrained from buying one for that exact reason - but I never had a chance to actually try myself.

People like the 441. It seems to be a well designed and durable saw in the hands of the operator, plus it is new enough to still be trendy on this site. Trendy is important on this site in terms of name dropping.

460s are good but dated saws and certainly not trendy any more. A couple years back on this site is was all about the 460, even with the Dolmar 7900 fad the 460 got as much screen time as the new girl on the block.

Hopefully soon, it will be all about the Husqawait.

The "problem" with the 441 has always been that it is very heavy and bulky for its power, and that hasn't changed a bit from "day one", back in 2005 or so.

Also, it marks the time when Stihl started lying on the weight of their pro saws. They lied the weight of the 440 and 460 up, at the same time as they lied the weight of the 441 down - obviously to make the 441 look more attractive than it really was...
