This here is the 028 I got from my dealer last week. It had a scored piston and was super dirty. I began the disassembly earlier this evening, got it all cleaned up, and back together and running.

Here's what I started with.

The old one no chain brake. The muffler was used untill early 80's. Your saw should have a metal tank. What size is the piston?

Looks like that one was set-up for the early style chain brake which was actually optional for a time. The brake parts for those are hard to come by since a lot of customers opted not to have the chain brake. Good work, that one turned out nice.

Someone asked about the chainbrake on this saw. It doesn't have one, and doesn't appear to ever had. Did early 028s come this way?

Yes, with just a handguard. You can retrofit a chainbrake into them though if you wish. Surprising it has a plastic tank without the chainbrake, and a WB tag. Is the piston the 42mm variety?

This muffler is a new one to me too.

Almost no muffler mod needed, it's rather un-restrictive!! The mufflers were case specific, as I'm sure you have found out.

Looks like a 42mm to me. Nice job. That saw cleaned up real well.

Forgot to say: Looks great, Brad!

Oh, and for that spur - you can get clutch drum-rim setups from Bailey's.

Our kitchen ain't as nice as yours but my wife would woop me good if I put a saw on her counter top.LOL

It had a 44mm P&C. I replaced it with another good used set, but they happened to be 42mm. I haven't tried yet, but I think the original cylinder will clean up nicely. I can get a 44mm Meteor piston for about $40, but not sure it's worth it since I'm going to sell the saw anyway. It runs great as is and the P&C on it are in great condition.

The tank is plastic.

I've never seen a bolt come through the case and into the side of the muffler. The muffler was seperate from the saw at the dealer, and told him wasn't a saw muffler, lol. Then I saw another like mine on eBay and realized my mistake.

I looked at Baileys for the rim sprocket and didn't find anything. I bought a new Carlton spur/drum on eBay for $17 shipped.

I am working on an 028 just like that one except I have the metal tank and 42mm piston. Mufflers are identical. Just ordered a new set of Caber rings for it. Also have a 44mm and 46mm 028 in the garage.
