I am at my absolute wits end with this saw. I have rebuilt a dozen of these things, and never had this much trouble. This saw is as close to new as possible, except for the case and crank. Everything, and i mean everything on this saw is brand new oem: P/c,coil,tank,vent,handle,carb,oiler,intake,hoses,and plastic covers. All this and it still wont run faster than 12,800 rpm. Vac & pressure tested good, starts and runs/idles exc. I put 2 of these things together this winter, both identical, and the same parts. If anyone could provide some advice,or would like to solve this problem, have at it,shes all yours. I love my stihl saws, but i am quickly thinking this one will only ever be a shelf queen.

You didn't replace the main bearings? Are the clutch and oil pump worm gear correctly matched? Sometimes those will bind up if they're not a correct match. Was the flywheel side oil seal changed out and if so, was it installed to the correct depth?

If you want to send it my way I can probably diagnose it for you.

So are you gonna put all our names in a hat and pull one out? Is the gap between the flywheel and coil set right?

NEW OEM BEARINGS,NEW OILER AND GEAR. EVERTHING SET TO OEM SPECS,W/OEM SHOP MANUAL AND STIHL TOOLS. I CHECKED AND RECHECKED EVERYTHING. LIKE I SAID,PUT 2 OF THESE THINGS TOGETHER SIDE BY SIDE THIS WINTER,AND THIS ONE HAS FOUGHT ME THE WHOLE WAY.:bang:

Wire the choke open, if that`s not it then change your carb.

I agree, if you have two of these 026's swap the carb from one to the other and see what she does. If you have already swapped everything ship it to me at 12,800 rpm my nephew would stihl run this saw over his crapsman/poulan, oh yeah Ill even send you enough dough to take the wife out for a dinner.

Please DONT send it to me !!!
sounds like a typical stihl to me ?? :)
calm down, look at it another time, letting it set awhile will give a new outlook..

I`ve had 026`s that would pull the choke flap in from full out position when the saw reached WOT, it would not completely shut them down but limit the amount of air the carb could pull, thus limit the WOT rpm. Some of the carbs used on the 026`s just won`t run the saw right, no matter how much they are adjusted they just won`t adjust in right to allow the engine to idle correctly, spool up quickly or reach maximum WOT , change the carb out to a known good running one and the problems were solved.

Be absoloute sure of the timing. I've seen many engines run with too much timing but still not detonate. With too much timing, everything will seem fine but it will not rev out. Maybe swap the coil with a known good one?

you guys are not reading all the info, carb is new oem,as is the coil. will the coil move enough to mess w/the timing? i am gonna pull it down to the case again tomorrow, for the third time. i feel i am very thorough, but i am obviously missing something here.

Doesn't mean just because it's "new oem" it's not defective (has certainly happened to me before). If possible try replacing suspected part with one you know is good.
